Hand washing since the pandemic...

Have we as a nation learnt nothing?

Still seeing women come out of the toilet cubicle, sprinkle a little water over their fingertips for a few seconds then leave.

No soap, no hot water, no rubbing of hands and certainly not lasting at least 20 seconds.

Honestly, I only wash my hands when they’re actually dirty/sticky, after number 2s and before food prep. That’s it. In the last five years I’ve had a couple of minor colds and no other infectious illnesses. I really don’t think all this excessive hygiene makes the difference people thinks it does.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 08/05/2025 12:39

Yanbu, it is vile.
A man sat beside me on the bus today, stinking, finger nails black, every time his body moved the smell of urine wafted around.

I don’t wash my hands when I come in from public places, and don’t carry hand sanitiser. I’ve also had no more than a couple of colds and no sickness bugs since 2020. You have absolutely no way of knowing that it was your actions that have prevented other illnesses.

Edited

I do some really filthy jobs at home like cleaning the litter tray and emptying a Sangenic bin- usually wearing gloves but I feel like sanitiser is also a good idea. Also use it going into a hospital, going into work from public transport in London and when I got to a public toilet (after hand washing). Other than that I do just wash my hands but I feel that on some occasions, back up is a good idea.

Hand sanitiser only works on clean hands. You must remove the bacteria which means washing, rinsing thoroughly and drying well.
Second best is hand sanitising wipes which removes bacteria.

I'm a hygiene freak where hands are concerned.

Please can you tell me which hand sanitising wipes do you use and are they better than the gel in a tube? Going away soon and I will be out and about and using public loos more frequently

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 08/05/2025 12:43

Yup. Many people are dirty buggers who will never change.

Envy Oh lordy @Glitchymn1. What really annoyed me recently was trying to use hand gel in a hospital - the dispenser was empty!

The gel doesn’t work against noro or other sickness bugs so when we have outbreaks they sometimes remove gel so staff wash their hands with soap and warm water.

That said, I often don’t wash my hands after the toilet and instead use alcohol gel from my bag because my allergies to some soaps are so bad I don’t risk ones that I can’t read the ingredients on.

Whybirdy · 08/05/2025 12:44

It's rancid isn't it, my ex never used to wash his hands, even if we'd been to hospital or somewhere. He used to say I was super paranoid about germs, but to me washing your hands is pretty basic hygiene.

Openthisdoor · 08/05/2025 12:47

the prize moment being using dettol wipes on a brand new pack of dettol wipes 🙈

@StevesLavaChicken 🤣 I think we all lost it for a bit there at the height of Covid. Still makes me laugh at the clips I watched of people actually washing their shopping in the sink and wondering whether I should be doing the same? 😆

I’m with you OP and still wash my hands well after being out, toilet etc - I don’t understand these people that still don’t get why there’s a need to and argue how they don’t get ill, but just pass their germs on to the rest of us!

I’ve been watching a lot of travel shows in Japan where not only is it so much cleaner but they still voluntarily wear masks, wash their hands regularly and even wear disposable gloves at buffets, but then the culture seem to be much more self aware and considerate towards others.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 08/05/2025 12:47

It's absolutely vile, makes me heave when people don't wash their hands.

I've always carried hand sanitiser, even before covid, I remember going to the loo at a petrol station and coming back to my car and covering everything with sanitiser including my steering wheel (just in case I had touched it) as I felt so icky. Same with petrol pumps the amount of people who touch them and they never get cleaned. So I always have a bottle in my glove box, along with wet wipes.

I have always washed my hands after coming in, I don't know who has touched what.

But I came down with something after eating out, not sure whether it was food poisoning or norovirus but I have never been so ill in my life. So I'm even more fastidious.

Ohthatsabitshit · 08/05/2025 12:50

I was thinking this just yesterday. In all honesty I don’t scrub as hard as in the pandemic.

Ds still insists on hand gel when he gets in the car. probably a good thing.

rockstarshoes · 08/05/2025 12:59

I wash my hands when I come through the door now plus I have hand gel in my bag & in the car! Obviously after using the toilet! 🤮 I also have some posh hand gel in the downstairs toilet in the vain hope that even the reluctant hand washers might squirt abit of that on their hands!

This makes sense - there were signs about Noro everywhere.

But maybe a sign to tell visitors would be handy. I can see how it would be interpreted. Alternatively, they just forgot to fill it (also possible).

SalmonDreams · 08/05/2025 22:59

Didn't we learn in the pandemic that most respiratory viral illnesses are mainly transmitted through airborne particles and that hand washing is less effective than keeping your distance or wearing a mask?

(I still wash my hands excessively but just saying..).

Ladysodor · 08/05/2025 23:12

Willowkins · 06/05/2025 22:33

I still clean the trolley handle at Sainsbury's but I never see anyone else doing this.

Why? That’s ridiculous! How many people do you think have touched the items you browse in the supermarket? Hundreds? thousands? Do you wipe the surface of every item you touch? Nobody else does. The trolley wiping thing was invented to fool us all, I can’t believe you’re still falling for it.

I do too cos people are mingers. Even before the pandemic I would wash my hands when I came back from the shops.

catkeys · 08/05/2025 23:26

I saw a lady come out of a public toilet cubicle yesterday and walk straight out of the toilets without even washing for a couple of seconds 🤢

I hate how you wash your hands in public toilets but then have to pull doors open that these non hand washers have touched. I use my sleeves when I can but this is more difficult in summer.

Our GP surgery has a self check in touch screen when you arrive which seems like the worst location for one!

Willowkins · 09/05/2025 01:00

@Crinkle77 yes and I still wipe down the equipment at the gym as well

Tryinghardtobefair · 09/05/2025 01:53

DH and DD were half arsed handwashers. DD was admitted to hospital with horrific norovirus last week. She'd been been admitted for two nights for something else, caught norovirus on the ward and ended up being re admitted the day after discharge because she couldn't stop vomiting. DH came down with it the evening she was discharged from her norovirus admission and ended up stuck in the toilet for 6 hours with a bowl on his lap, until he finally conceded and accepted anti sickness and diarrhoea meds.

I escaped it, and I think a lot of it was due to having higher standards of hand hygiene because I washed my hands every time I entered or left the hospital cubicle , before I ate etc

PoopingAllTheWay · 09/05/2025 02:00

People are disgusting
Were before Covid, Still are
Vile !

MumChp · 09/05/2025 02:54

I never wash my hands in public restrooms. The sinks and soap most places are awful.
I use hand sanitiser after leaving.
I mostly avoid to use public restrooms.

First thing at home I wash my hands. Always done.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/05/2025 09:58

soupyspoon · 07/05/2025 23:36

We all have germs on us right now, Im not sure what people think they're washing off in any case.

Someone else’s. Potentially dangerous for some people.
Anyway, I’d rather not give myself the squits by being lazy after using the loo.

DonkeyDumpling · 09/05/2025 10:08

I wash my hands after the loo and before cooking food and that’s about it.
I can’t get worked up over “germs 😱” on door handles or trolleys, what on earth? A few germs are good for you and build up your immune system. Constant handwashing and rubbing chemicals over your hands every time you touch something is really not good for you.

ExpressCheckout · 09/05/2025 10:10

I've a long term condition which leaves me immunosuppressed. I'm very careful washing my hands, never touching my face inadvertently, not touching a door handle directly without immediately sanitising afterwards, etc. Once you begin to observe closely others' habits you soon realise how disgusting some people are.

ladyofshertonabbas · 09/05/2025 10:16

People are gross. Working in a cafe, no one would wash their hands. Just get the bus in and start making sandwiches 🤮.
