To think that there is a misunderstanding about social housing.

On social media, lots of people assume that people in social / council housing are getting a free house and don’t work.

i grew up in social housing: my dad worked from age 15 to 65.

my brothers have worked since they were 16 and both live in social housing.

its not “free housing”: it’s rented, affordable accommodation.

Oh, I wonder if it has changed, or maybe dependent on council? This was the process for us, but you're going back over a decade mind. The housing officer was actually annoyed with us when we demanded the spare key back. They weren't doing the snagging, and things had become unproductive at this point. Funnily enough, the job got completed after that. The system worked out in the earlier days, or we would have asked for it back sooner.

My HA and my friends HA wont do it They expect the tenant to be home.

oh so you and all your neighbours have all had this done at the same time too. Cool

Are you under the impression that homeowners have their own personal tradespeople? Perhaps you've never lived anywhere other than social housing, because so much of what you complain about is just normal life.

Oh so you dont get to choose which company or contractor fits your bathroom or kitchen then. Did the Government make this law that home owners cant choose which contractors or company they use or is it a prerequisite from the buiding society or bank when you take out the mortgage.

JenniferBooth · 12/05/2025 15:09

One minute SH tenants have it more cushty than home owners but now all of a sudden its the same Make your minds up

You could choose as well. But you'd have to pay for it.

No we cant choose. What boollcks Do you really think if the Grenfell residents had a choice they would have gone along with all those "works" If tenants can choose why were their complaints ignored.

We are not allowed to choose who we want for major works Its in the tenancy agreement If i could fucking choose then why was i threatened over my front door and forced to have a more inferior one fitted.

Digdongdoo · 12/05/2025 14:15

Why does anyone need to take two weeks off work for a kitchen fitter? Nobody, homeowner or otherwise does that. You want the choices that come with home ownership, you'll have to pay for it yourself. Can't have it all ways.

Because they don't do one at a time, they do 4 or 5 at a time.

Yes people need telling

it’s not free or subsidised
its not even that cheap
you don’t need to move out at any point
most tenancies turn into lifetime tenancies
we can rattle around in our 3 bed houses long after the kids have left home

Errr what makes you think it's not cheap or free? It's much cheaper because it's set by the council

Keep bringing up grenfell is sick to be honest. The cladding was used on many properties- dwellings as well as businesses; both private and public sector. It was a tragedy and of course the people responsible should be punished but honestly what does it have to do with anything? In general there are far more stringent safety protocols and checks for works carried out on behalf of a LA than someone who finds a builder online.

That's a difficult one, as I'd imagine them not turning up when they're supposed to, which will be frustrating to say the least. I wouldn't even be surprised if you get a "Oh we knocked and the tenant didn't answer. It is extremely stressful when you have no choice, but to live there (as we had to back in the day). I remember microwaving my dinner in the bedroom because the kitchen was unusable for months. I do think they take the piss a bit when you're not there to watch them, which drags the job out, meaning an uncomfortable living condition/lots of dust and disruption for longer than necessary. We had no choice at the time, so the key option did work for us, and it was what the housing office preferred. We didn't have a payment to withhold as it was free, so taking the key back when things weren't getting done worked, fhs housing officer was verg reluctant to give it back. The fact the company had a completion date hurried it up funnily enough, and that we started giving them days we would be able to take off work, and if they didn't turn up etc etc.
We were very lucky to get out. We cannot afford our kitchen changed at the moment, but had a different renovation carried out, but at least we had the option to withhold their payment until the job was complete. It definately gave them a kick up the arse to get the snagging finished.

Its sick that Grenfell happened at all!!!!!!!! Yet mentioning it on a thread about social housing where people are saying SH tenants should be grateful for what they get is the sick thing. OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the context of the Grenfell Tower fire, there were reports of residents being told, or feeling they should be, grateful for services provided by the Tenant Management Organisation (TMO). This was perceived as a dismissive attitude towards residents' legitimate concerns about safety, particularly regarding the fire hazards of the cladding and other aspects of the building. The TMO's actions were criticized for ignoring these concerns and creating a power imbalance where residents were not treated with respect

Apparently its sick for me to raise this on a thread where SH tenants are told they should be grateful

CoffeecakeSuncream · 12/05/2025 15:34

No need for that, come on keep it civil. We are all entitled to our own opinion, but it shouldn't cross a line. @Dreammhaus

My HA insists a tenant is present when work is done.
I'd quite happily leave a key or have a key safe but they have refused these options in the past when it's things like gas servicing and when I have needed repairs like a tap for example.
The roof was done just after I moved in as part of the maintenance in general and I was told this would happen, and I didn't need to be in apart from the first day for the asbestos survey, when's the first day? 2 month window. But you have to be in, but we'll not be able to tell you when to be in.

I'm not sure if it would be different for something like a kitchen or bathroom refit with it being a much longer job.

It wasn't only sh tenants in Greenfell and it isn't only sh tenants who remain affected by cladding.

Friend of mine had a three day window for a fire safety appointment Yet these HAs claim that they want working tenants

The ‘lifetime tenancy’ IS with the tenant……not the bricks and mortar

do people not know this?

I did not know this no, so thank you

But you hear of people passing their property/tenancy down to their children, like a type of inheritance? How does that work if it's not a specific property?

Nope, but for any structural work we have to pay the council to decide if they will allow it, and then pay their building control team to check the work is done to their standard, after paying for the work to be done initially and if it's not, we have to then pay again for the builder to make the required changes and pay again for council building control to check it. So the council is also dictating to us to an extent what we can and cannot do with our properties, and we have the added pleasure of paying for them to do this.

And yes, if we don't pay this it can invalidate our mortgage.

Is it not hush hush? Surely they'd need to apply for it like anybody else? Unless, they're already on the tenancy?
