Do I let new neighbour know they’ve made the village page?!

Fedup2910 · 06/05/2025 14:08

I’ve recently moved, where I used to live had new tenants over the weekend.
Walked past there Saturday and noticed they were flying a drone (took off from the garden so I know it belongs to them), it was obviously out again this morning as people are complaining/ want to contact police etc.

I have some bits I took with me by mistake when we moved (appliance manuals) which I need to drop over- whilst I’m there do I mention people are kicking off about the drone flying on the village FB page or keep out of it?

Keep out of it, not your circus etc and as long as they are within the law, what are you going to say about it?

Nameftgigb · 06/05/2025 14:11

Why are people complaining? They’re not breaking the law so I wouldn’t mention it

Fedup2910 · 06/05/2025 14:12

I was just going to give the heads up that the drone is annoying the neighbours and didn’t want them to be written off before they’d formally met anybody.

People are just being precious about the Drone being flown over their properties. I personally don’t have a problem with it.

Because there are privacy and safety rules associated with drone operation which I imagine they may be breaching if people are complaining to the point of wanting to involve the police.

Snorlaxo · 06/05/2025 14:14

Keep out of it.

andtheworldrollson · 06/05/2025 14:14

I would keep out of it
if sounds like illegal flying - too close to residential I would guess but the neighbours need to sort that themselves

UnkindlyMay · 06/05/2025 14:15

It might not be legal, unless they have a big garden and a sparsely populated street:
"Do not fly closer to people than 50m
This includes people in buildings and transport, including cars, lorries, trains, and boats.

You must keep a minimum horizontal distance of 50m between your drone or model aircraft and people. This creates a no fly zone around people that goes all the way up to the legal height limit. It can help to think of this no fly zone as a cylinder.

You must not fly over people in this no fly zone, even if you fly higher than 50m."

Not everyone is on Facebook, personally I’d like a neighbour telling me if people were bitching and moaning about me on a social platform because I wouldn’t see it and would want to know.

This is why I’m conflicted as I’d like to know also

Suggest they join the Facebook page for village news, but leave them to find out from that that their drone is being talked about.

rosemarble · 06/05/2025 14:36

Not quite the same, but I did inform my new neighbours when other neighbours were bitching about them on a whatsapp group of 8 or so houses in out little square. It was (unsurprisingly) about parking. The new neighbours didn't know what the rules were. I told the them what the rules were w/o telling them about the bitching and told the whatsapp group that I'd mentioned the rules to the neighbours (in a tone indicating the bitching wasn't nice).

just because you don't care doesn't mean others should be happy to have someone recording them in the privacy of their own garden!

pimplebum · 06/05/2025 14:40

I’d definitely want to know if I was pissing people off
and the people who are pissed off want them to know
Problem easily fixed, no?

Depends who or what the drone is photographing as it flies over the properties !

Most people aren't that keen on the idea of a flying camera that can monitor what is going on in their gardens.

Agree
OP are you actually the drone flyer because I’m amazed you wouldn’t be bothered by this invasion of privacy

Disappointedneighbour · 06/05/2025 14:47

I would definitely mention it.

Moveoverdarlin · 06/05/2025 14:49

I’m currently sat in my bra and knickers in the garden. Not remotely overlooked but I would have a massive problem with someone flying their drone over.

I would say nothing OP

Which includes if you are flying it from your own garden ( if neighbours are within those distances )
The drone would need to be launched far enough away from people and properties.

akkakk · 06/05/2025 14:50

That is for larger drones, not smaller ones...
https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code/where-you-can-fly

Drones and model aircraft below 250g
The rules on minimum distances to people are different for drones and model aircraft below 250g.
If you’re flying a drone or model aircraft that’s below 250g, you can fly closer to people than 50m and you can fly over them. You still can’t fly over crowds.
Remember, you must never put people in danger. Even small drones and model aircraft could injure people if you don’t fly them safely.

Drones and model aircraft that weigh 250g to 500g
If you’re flying a drone or model aircraft that’s between 250g and 500g, you can fly closer to people than 50m if you get the A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC). You still must not intentionally fly over people.

most drones used by 'amateurs' / hobby flyers are sub-250g - I have a DJI Mini Pro 4 which is in this category and it is an impressive bit of kit - it has a 10km+ range (though you must keep it in line of sight, so realistically a lot less), has professional level photography and video etc. I have a licence to fly it which gives me even more freedom, and there is zero legal issue in flying it over residential areas - however, common sense says, be sensitive and courteous...

generally those complaining know very little about the law and what is allowed - a lot more is allowed than is assumed...

I hate drones. They are noisy and increasingly being used to scope properties for thieves. Anyone flying one over a residential property is purely being nosy and trying to annoy anyone who can hear it IMO.

BangersAndGnash · 06/05/2025 15:00

I'd be fucking furious if someone was flying a drone over my garden or over me when I was out enjoying park.

Bloody horrible noisy intrusive things.

But....if the neighbours and community don't like it they can do the right and proper thing and knock on the door and ask them to stop. Instead of moaning behind their backs and not giving them a chance.

TheSandgroper · 06/05/2025 15:02

I regularly hang my washing in the nuddy getting my Vit D. A drone would certainly be invading my privacy.

Agree.
We had this during Covid. A drone flying over and even hovering in front of peoples windows looking in. The police confirmed the person who owned it was arrested. He’d kept pictures and videos of people in their gardens.
Disgusting !

It is often hard to find who is flying them, so maybe the village isn't aware where it is starting flight from, unlike this neighbour.

I've had people using them to film over where we live and posting online, people on holiday using them over hotels where people were wanting privacy and it's really intrusive - try reading with that buzzing around for hours when you've paid for a room! These are the tech things we need to be on top of. Drones are being used in nefarious ways by people with bad intentions increasingly.
