To think that "Time healed the wound" isn't a great advert for returning to teaching?

This keeps on appearing as a mumsnet sponsored thing in my active conversations list. It's great that time healed the wounds caused by teaching for the person featured, but has much changed in teaching that means you won't get wounded again? It would put me off teaching either as a first timer or a returner.

I thought that too! Any job I had had in the past that caused me to leave with ‘wounds’ I would certainly not be going back to. Especially since there doesn’t appear to be much that has changed according to threads I read here.

KnickerFolder · 06/05/2025 17:25

The MN sponsored posts are nuts at the moment. I assume they are using AI eg things like “DS has a GoHenry account” or (about their own ready meal range), “it’s a ready meal, it’s no worse or better than other ready meals” 😂 Well that is resounding praise, I’m sold…

FrippEnos · 06/05/2025 19:12

The one that I looked through contained the same type of information and pictures that mislead people in to teaching in the first place.
Yes there were some good bits about setting boundaries etc. but if you don't get the right school that can bite you on the arse.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 06/05/2025 19:15

Yes I saw this and thought it was nuts! And didn’t make teaching or returning to teaching sound at all appealing.

90yomakeuproom · 06/05/2025 19:20

Completely agree. It's bizarre.

napody · 06/05/2025 19:21

Can you please post a screenshot of the ad? I'm interested in the discourses around teacher recruitment and this seems a new (and very frank) angle!

Interesting if it implies that 'setting boundaries' is wholly within the teacher's control, especially with widened expectations on schools in society.

Honestly, if "Time healed the wound" was a Relationships thread, then I reckon everybody would be telling the OP to run a mile and not go back to the abusive bastard.

TheMeasure · 06/05/2025 19:41

I find it quite ironic that Mumsnet, who allowed horrible abuse of teachers on here by posters unhappy with the government’s policy about school closures throughout the pandemic, are now getting behind them being told, basically, to get over themselves.
Time has NOT healed the wound.

This is the most bonkers recruitment I've ever seen!
Has anyone seen the mini trailer they show at the cinema? It's a really long recruitment ad where a guy plays table tennis with 5 well behaved year 10s and his 'biggest test' is a student having a quiet day. More fantasy than Game of Thrones 🤣

I'd sooner poke my eyes out with rusty nails than return to teaching and I can't imagine why a sales pitch like that would be attractive.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/05/2025 20:05

That's bonkers! Even the many disenchanted teachers on MN could probably come up with a few truthful, more positive and persuasive upsides of teaching than that (even if they could also come up with a lot of negatives)!

Goldenmemories · 06/05/2025 20:32

I'm still teaching. There is so much toxicity involved in a vocation that should be so rewarding. I often wish I'd trained in another career. Teachers are portrayed on MN as weak and lazy but all my colleagues and I work incredibly hard under very challenging conditions for meagre pay. Trying to tempt ex teachers back with this wording (healing wounds) is laughable.

Wolfiefan · 06/05/2025 20:43

Funnily enough I’ve not seen this ad. MN must know hell would freeze over before I’d go back.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/05/2025 20:48

I'm still teaching (only because I am lucky to teach in a school where the lack of behaviour problems largely allows me to cope with all the other stuff). But why anyone thinks an advert will work on someone who actually knows what teaching is like and who no doubt left for good reason, I have no idea.

WhatNoRaisins · 06/05/2025 20:50

I'm not a teacher but if I was someone deliberating over whether this career was the right choice for me it would put me off. A career that's going to wound me doesn't sound great even if time will heal it.

That made me laugh too. It had a strange, youth pastor vibe

SnoopyPajamas · 06/05/2025 21:13

I haven't seen that ad in a while, actually. I tend to get the one for Battersea Dogs Home that covers months of the dog's life, but goes on for so long it feels like it's being filmed in real time

If the wound scabs over and you start to feel the itch again, promise you'll come back and tell us 😂

sandrevolutionary · 06/05/2025 21:29

From what I gather, Claire left teaching at the end of her NQT year, so I don't think the wounds were quite that deep after only one year as a teacher.

The article is more about gaining life experience before going into teaching, as she did her PGCE and NQT and then went away and worked in various other non-teaching roles before returning.

The healing angle is probably not the best one to highlight.

When asked if she feels more confident and better equipped to teach now, Claire agreed: “Certainly. I think my case is an example of time healing a wound

Wolfiefan · 06/05/2025 21:43

@SnoopyPajamas haven’t been in a classroom for nearly a decade. I think I am safe. But I can now drive past my ex place of work without starting to feel like I’m about to have a panic attack. So that’s something.

S0j0urn4r · 06/05/2025 21:48

I'm still healing from assault by a student. Don't know if I'll ever go back. Wouldn't recommend teaching to anyone.

I'm really sorry to hear that. No one should work in conditions that result in assault.
