To not be happy about paying this much tax

Lovingthehamsterwheel · 06/05/2025 11:42

Name changed to enable objectivity.
I just saw this new tax calculator that shows you how much tax you are paying in total, including all hidden taxes, council tax etc

For a Person on 75k a year, 44 percent of earnings go on tax.

10k of that is spent on welfare.

Am i being unreasonable to think this is absolutely a terrible time to be alive in terms of taxes in the UK. And it is no wonder higher earners are leaving the country.

Do you have the breakdown of that 44%?

Do you have the breakdown of that 44%?

Its too long to post it but if you the calculator above on the link, it takes about 30 seconds to add an income of 75000 and shows the breakdown.

44% does sound like a lot but running a country, infrastructure NHS costs a lot before you get to
welfare.

What would you propose to do with the people who depend on welfare state?

Lasttraintolondon · 06/05/2025 11:47

Well on the other thread around benefit fraud about a third of mumsnetters said they wouldn't report it - which let's be honest is tacit acceptance it's OK to them. Then you wonder why your taxes are so high.

Ps you forgot about VAT. It's worse than you think.

WitchesofPainswick · 06/05/2025 11:48

You'd pay about 20k tax on 75k.

Try a better calculator.

frenchnoodle · 06/05/2025 11:48

That calculator is crap.

Ablondiebutagoody · 06/05/2025 11:48

I agree with you. Far, far too many non-contributers who think that they are entitled to other people's money. And a Labour Government that agrees with them.

They include VAT on that website - seems shonky to me though not sure how their calculations work.

owlexpress · 06/05/2025 11:50

Agree the calculator is crap, it won't even let me put in that I'm in Scotland where our income tax thresholds are lower.

FloraBotticelli · 06/05/2025 11:50

Sensationalist calculator pushing an agenda. A big chunk of what it’s including is employer-paid NI contributions, plus a load of extras like stamp duty that only apply in limited circumstances.

I think the OP is talking about all types of contributions, not just income tax

WitchesofPainswick · 06/05/2025 11:48

You'd pay about 20k tax on 75k.

Try a better calculator.

The calculation is including average amounts of fuel, and alcohol duty, VAT, TV licence, car tax and other such contributions for that income level which is why it is so high.

You mean you didn't want this to be associated with your regular user name.

Groundhedgehogday · 06/05/2025 11:51

I just tried it and got 20k tax plus the "hidden taxes" are only relevant if you are involved in that activity.

What about council tax? Road tax? Tax on goods and services? Inheritance tax? Tax on pensions? Tax on savings and investments? We actually do spend a vast amount of our money on various hidden and not so hidden taxes. Whether it is right or wrong is one thing, but the facts are there.

Hiff · 06/05/2025 11:51

You only pay 40% tax on any earnings over £50k and the 45% rate only kicks in if you earn over £125k.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/05/2025 11:52

We’re high earners. No intention of leaving the country. That’s life.
We pay less tax in the UK than many other nations.

Bejinxed · 06/05/2025 11:52

That calculator is wrong

On an income of £75000 you pay £ 17,432.00 in tax and £ 3,510.60 in NI which totals £20,942.

If you live in Scotland you pay a bit more tax - £19,513 and £3,510.60 but this totals £23023 so both around 30% of total income.

SlipperyLizard · 06/05/2025 11:52

That calculator is very disingenuous, I do not pay employer’s NICs or onshore corporation tax. Unless I move house I don’t pay SDLT. I have an electric car so no fuel duty. The TV licence is not a tax.

A salary of £75k will pay c £21k in tax and NICs.

The “hidden taxes” are ridiculous and discredit the entire thing.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/05/2025 11:53

Ok then. I paidy taxes until I could no longer medically pay NI or income tax.
Shall I kill myself then because you don't want to contribute to a service that you'll undoubtedly need to use yourself at one point or other?

Hiff · 06/05/2025 11:51

Why let the facts get in the way of a good goad?

Its not an income tax calclator. I am a higher rate tax payer, I understand taxes.

This calculator shows you complete tax including council tax, vat, alcohol duty etc On top of your income tax.

Basically how much money goes from your earnings in total into the government purse, in total.

OP posts:
TaupePanda · 06/05/2025 11:55

Have you actually interrogated this? I have just done it and can instantly see it is nonsense. The first thing listed is Employers NI contributions - I don't pay that and neither would you if you are PAYE. You need to drill down into these things before spreading it about.

As for your comment on welfare - the majority of that is pensions; should we stop paying those? Cut the elderly loose to save some cash?

What about vat? Council tax?

some hidden taxes are not appropriate to every circumstance but the many people on this thread saying the tax would only be 20k are absolutely missing some (or all) of the hidden taxes.

the overall tax burden paid by an individual is a lot more than just income tax

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 06/05/2025 11:56

You dont pay 44% on total, only on what you earn above the cap.
You'll take over 55k
