To think that in 2025 we should have washing machines that accurately show how many minutes are left?

My washing machine has been showing it has two minutes left on the programme for the past 10 minutes. It was only meant to be a quick 15 minutes refresh wash for a blanket.

It's 2025, we have AI that can write novels and humanoid robots. Why can't we have washing machines that say there is two minutes left on the cycle and actually mean it!

Because my machine is hopeless at guessing the time remaining and to prevent me checking on it like a toddler left alone I now have it plugged into a smart plug and now that tells me when the machine has finished. I also have one for the tumble dryer.

Best part of that is that you can set the home assistant to tell certain people the machine has finished which means Ds1 knows when his clothes have finished washing because he always uses the machine on a set day.

Mine's reasonably accurate once it's got going.

However it does also sing when it's finished. Apparently you can switch it off, but I haven't told dh who groans when it sings.
The rest of us sing along.

Miele machine here about 10 years old and completely accurate countdown timer. They do exist I promise.

We’ve got a Miele and it is spot on every time. I know as I set an alarm on my phone for it also.

Mind you it cost a grand so it bloody well should!

Seamond · 05/05/2025 20:45

If it's a blanket I bet it's stuck on the spin, mine does that sometimes if it's unbalanced, you might have to get it out and adjust it's position a bit

Lougle · 05/05/2025 21:06

Our washing machine was replaced under warranty and I despise the new washing machine. It has the most insanely infuriating high pitched whine I've ever heard and it's so loud.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/05/2025 21:11

ShodAndShadySenators · 05/05/2025 20:37

Ours is pretty good too. And quiet, I often don't realise it's finished the load and is waiting. I sometimes wish it would beep or something to let me know. The dryer can manage it...

Ours sings a song when it’s done so I can’t complain on that front!

Shitmonger · 05/05/2025 21:14

DiggyDoodad · 05/05/2025 20:21

The machine states the expected duration of the selected programme under optimal conditions.
If you're washing a single blanket, then the conditions are not optimal because the machine will struggle to balance the load sufficiently for spinning. It will spend a long time flipping this way and that, partially spinning, stopping, then more flipping and more partial spinning until it's evened the load. Only then it will it start the spin and the two-minute countdown will actually begin. A machine can easily spend half an hour attempting to balance. Sometimes they just give up and don't spin at all.

So it's not possible for the machine to accurately estimate how long an individual load will take, it only works on generalisations. It gives the user only an approximation of the washing time.

This sounds like something my washing machine would say.

Yes. I love my Bosch but it does get confused.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/05/2025 21:18

My washing machine is fine, it’s the tumble dryer that’s a contrary bastard. I just want it to dry my clothes. Is it too much to ask?

I set it on the driest setting. I make sure the filters are cleaned out. It’s not too full. I set it to an hours drying time. After about five minutes the bloody thing beeps at me and tells me the washing is dry. But it isn’t. It’s all still damp. Why does it do this?

Thank god for nice weather and being able to dry outside and not have to use the bastard thing. Fuck you tumble dryer.

yeesh · 05/05/2025 21:25

Mine is a fucking liar

Hotafternoon · 05/05/2025 21:25

Hi Sense washing machine does countdown and is accurate. Tumble dryer also counts down but does play tunes when you switch on and choose programme.

scalt · 05/05/2025 21:30

My one is good, shows the time and never finishes late. Hotpoint.

LongLiveTheLego · 05/05/2025 21:33

Washing machines are a bad influence on fitted sheets, because they are also liars. Declare themselves to be “extra deep” then mock you by popping off the corner.

LeticiaMorales · 05/05/2025 21:36

My tumble dryer is like this. It sometimes dries a load of towels in 40 minutes, sometimes an hour. Same towels. It's a guessing game.

Shitmonger · 05/05/2025 21:14

Yes, I can imagine it, the deceitful piece of machinery. They just make stuff up.

Lindy2 · 05/05/2025 21:48

I've just bought a Bush washer dryer.

It tells the truth. The timer is accurate.

It counts down the whole wash, rinse, spin etc as one set time from the start to the finish and it sticks to it.

I'm very happy. It's not a fancy brand but I'm pleased with how it's working and it's timer.

NeedWineNow · 05/05/2025 21:49

Tempting fate here but my 10 year old Indesit shows the time and is pretty accurate. It has occasional temperamental moments, but by and large it trundles along quite nicely.

SleepingisanArt · 05/05/2025 22:08

Old Miele was spot on as is the replacement. My Miele tumble dryer (aged 20) will adjust the time left as it has sensors so if the load isn't dry enough it adds further time but once it gets to 5 minutes left that's the cooling time and it counts down accurately to the end.

I've mentioned it before but if your washing machine ends the cycle and allows you to open the door but still shows 1 minute remaining it probably wants you to run the cleaning cycle. (In the Miele that's an empty drum with biological washing powder, or an expensive cleaner which is essentially the same, on the hottest setting - roughly every 6 weeks.)

ChicOliveCritic · 05/05/2025 22:26

Me too. Thank you for sharing. Great explanation. I genuinely thought it was only my machine that does this. The number of times I've been late to appointments and events. How do you explain to someone that my washing machine lied to me!😂

echt · 05/05/2025 22:45

Another vote for Miele for accuracy. And its express and cold washes.

Bosch dishwasher is also spot on.

I'm a nut about the time - seven clocks in my house + my wristwatch.

Yanbu!

Also, I've got the Samsung washing machine which can be monitored on your phone - but you can't actually select cycles remotely

After I do a wash, I like to do an extra rinse and spin, but I can't do this remotely, which is annoying

Yes you can! I always set it to do an extra spin from the bedroom whilst feeding my baby! You need to ensure stay connect has been switched on on your washing machine to access it remotely.

Okay, I've bookmarked you and will try tomorrow! It's driven me crazy 🙌😄
