To think that some people don’t use the ring doorbell as they think it stops them being on camera

Some people that come to our house do not press our ring doorbell and simply knock the door instead (no knocker so just tapping on the door). The ring doorbell is hard to miss.

I think they do it as they think they won’t be on camera if they don’t press the bell (it records from 1m away so we know they’re there before they even knock!)

Next time I'm planning to wait and let them knock again so i can point out the bell and say we don’t really hear it when people just knock.

I don't mind if people knock instead of using the doorbell. I just wish they would knock with knuckles instead of the fist pounding some delivery drivers do. I feel like I'm being raided by the police.

A lot of them don’t work so I ring then knock.

And then you get the delivery drivers who use the bell, the door knocker, hammer on the glass and flick the letterbox. I walk slower to them.

I don’t use Ring doorbells as they are all so loud. If room 101 was still a thing a would be putting that chime straight in there.

Eh? You can down the sound down, or mute it altogether. You don’t even need to use a chime unit at all. They’re far more controllable than a traditional doorbell.

They REALLY piss me off. I open the door and let them know too.

I can’t turn the sound down I don’t own it, yet I hear it several times a day on my estate.

You hear of police requesting video doorbell footage of before a crime scene. Such as a missing person. As terraced houses, people walking past trigger the cameras.

I live in a first floor flat which has a communal door with one neighbour. I have to walk across the flat, down the stairs, open my front door, then open the communal door.

Like we are all sitting by the front door all the time.

faerietales · 05/05/2025 10:45

I mostly don't even notice them, just knock out of habit.

mondaytosunday · 05/05/2025 10:46

I don’t have a ring doorbell but I do have a regular one, which is quite obvious. I also have a door knocker and I’d say the majority of people use that which surprises me. Sometimes it’s hard to tell, if I’m at the back of the house, whether it’s my door or my neighbours they are knocking on (terraced).

Fair enough. The external chime sound is useful for visitors to the know the bell is working, but it can also be turned down or off.

I live in a road where most of the properties are in a square, with a green area and play equipment in the middle.

I can hear the Ring doorbells from the properties opposite to my home.

Busyquaver1 · 05/05/2025 11:40

Yes I have one but often forget to change the battery on the chimer inside only when some1 says I used the bell do I realise the battery needs changing as it never went of.

I was friends with a woman who had a ring doorbell. She lived in a mid terrace and told me about the time the neighbours either side of her were leaning over the dividing wall in front of the houses chatting and they started bitching about her. Friend was away on holiday and they obviously didn't know the ring was recording 🙈

The person who eavesdrops on her neighbours is coming out the worst here. Very nasty not to ensure when you get one of those doorbells that your neighbours know you are spying and eavesdropping on them.

I hate ring doorbells.

Personally, I think it's utterly weird to want to know who is walking past and knocking on your door when you're not in the house. Curtain twitching to the nth degree. Also, ime frequently used to screen grab and post pictures on local Facebook groups of BME people "acting suspiciously".

Also weird to expect all people who may knock at your door to understand the functionality of a piece of tech you decided to attach to your house. No, I don't understand how it works and I'm not inclined to learn.

Also, I don't want to talk to people through a ring doorbell. If you're not available to answer the door please don't engage me in an awkward conversation about how you're at work or on the toilet (this has happened to me once!) - just don't answer.

I feel better now. And remember, it ain't about you if it ain't about you.
