AIBU to have reservations about so many dogs at the outlet today?

Was it bring your dog day today?
There were literally hundreds of dogs and I feel as if I’ve hardly ever seen a dog at a big outlet before. Is this a new thing?
I was in clothes shops with dogs all running around me as I was shopping. Dogs’ leads all around while trying on shoes. What’s going on with the shopping with dogs?
I mean I don’t mind dogs at all, service dogs I adore; but who wants dogs in clothes shops? It seems really odd to me.

You mean you saw a couple of dogs in a shop today.

I think there were more than that.

All the dog owners I know just wouldn't take their dogs to retail parks and places that aren't really suitable for dogs.

I like dogs, but they have their place, and it isn't a retail park.

I’m guessing p some sort of stone urn then, and I’m sure that wasn’t the first time it had been peed on.

I have been reminded of this

It’s so weird that some of you think I made this up. Why would I do that? I asked staff - they said it was a real phenomenon as the outlets have encouraged shoppers obviously to increase footfall and income. I get it.
But I’m not exaggerating the numbers of dogs was very high because there were so many people.
I haven’t been to an outlet in a while which is why I asked staff - “is it a new thing?”.
AIBU is an appropriate place to discuss contentious subjects.
you can see from all the confirmation on this thread that I have no need to exaggerate the selfishness of a significant proportion of dog owners.
Bringing your dog into a very busy clothes shop is not grown-up behaviour. It’s not intelligent, it’s not considerate. It’s the behaviour of a spoilt child.
The people who left a member of their party outside with their dogs - I can respect up to a point; but clothes shopping with your dog (unless it’s a badged service dog) is just unintelligent behaviour. I cannot respect a person who does it.
I don’t think I’m being unreasonable.

@wildfellhall It's the weird fur baby lovers who think that everyone hates dogs so they refuse to believe that dog numbers at these types of places have increased.

Ignore them.

I like dogs and I have noticed a massive increase in dog numbers in places that I think should be dog free, so I believe you and agree with you.

Bringing your dog into a very busy clothes shop is not grown-up behaviour.

It's pathetic.

Tbh, we would leave someone with the dogs outside a shop if we had popped out for the day and the plan was for a dog walk and a trip to a town. We wouldn't leave them in the car

I do think that is reasonable. It’s bringing them into a very busy shop which baffles me.

100s 😂

We had our dog at a shopping place today he wasn't in shops there was a few other dogs I'm sad it wasn't HUNDREDS

TeenLifeMum · 05/05/2025 20:40

Clark’s village has dog bowls outside most shops. I don’t take my dogs because they’re spaniels and happier in a field but I see lots of “handbag dogs” in shops.

The outlet closest to me (East Mids Designer) actively encourages people to bring their dogs, they often have a dog treat van knocking about plus water bowls outside loads of the shops. Not sure on the rules for the dogs going inside the actual shops though, can’t say I saw any last time I went (in the shops I mean - within the outlet there were loads though)

this is the one closest to me... i have two dogs but I've stopped going there now as it's rammed enough in shops without tripping over bloody dog leads! I absolutely love dogs (well any animals more than people) and love meeting new ones when out and about but it was to much for me

they are definitely in the shops as I tripped over a lead in next!

Shade17 · 05/05/2025 20:58

Totally agree. Dogs want to be chasing balls in the park and sniffing each other's arses, not being dragged round Cheshire Oaks or Bicester Village.

I think that somewhat depends on the dog. Ours only tends to come out shopping if we’re away with him somewhere but is a rare and striking breed which attracts a lot of attention. We are stopped constantly and given that he loves people he rather enjoys all the fuss. He struts down the street like he owns it.

I went shopping today and there were so many kids around! Wish they would leave at them home! Constantly running around grabbing clothes with their juice and chocolate hands!

🤣🤣🤣 I can't stand the adults either but what can we do

I know exactly what you mean! It does feel like dogs are suddenly everywhere in shops. A lot of outlet centres have recently started advertising themselves as “dog friendly,” so more people bring their pets along for the day. It’s handy for owners, but I agree it can feel a bit chaotic – especially when you’re trying on clothes or shoes and dodging leads at the same time. Service dogs are one thing, but packs of pets in fashion shops does seem strange!

It probably wasn’t a special “bring your dog day.” Many shopping outlets now allow dogs inside as part of being more pet-friendly, so owners don’t have to leave them at home. That’s why you saw so many. The policy varies between stores: some welcome dogs, others don’t. It’s becoming more common, though not everyone likes the idea – especially in clothing shops where it feels out of place.

ACynicalDad · 01/10/2025 07:38

I’m liking for a new office and see wework slow dogs, it’s at the top of my list. Coincidence, mainly but it’s an added benefit.

Oneearringlost · 01/10/2025 07:40

There was a thread about dogs a few weeks ago, and there was a poster who took Holy Communion at the altar, next to someone's dog. That took the biscuit ( or wafer!).

LyricalGangsta · 01/10/2025 07:51

I think the dogs everywhere thing now is just part of how as a whole society, no one seems to give a toss about anyone else anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️
People want to bring their dog shopping (personally I have no idea why - I couldn’t shop properly while also trying to ensure my dog was ok) and they don’t care how that might affect other people.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 02/10/2025 16:40

I've just come back from a lovely week away at a country park in Norfolk with my partner and dogs. It was dog friendly, although they did have to be on-lead when in the grounds because of the wildlife and fishing lakes.
Because dogs weren't allowed to be left unattended in the wooden cabins dogs were permitted in the restaurant which I thought was nice. There was also an eatery which did not permit dogs but would deliver food to your cabin which I thought was also nice - so catering for dog owners and people who weren't so keen on dogs.

wildfellhall · 07/10/2025 14:08

We met up with friends recently and they brought their dog to the pub and drove the staff crazy as it wouldn’t stay still and they were tripping over him. The place was full of dogs but this dog is young and very excited. Not really a sit quietly on the floor dog. Then we went for a walk and he pissed on every single corner, lamppost, road sign, door step - it was incredible.
I mean, it’s such an imposition on everyone. It then did a huge 💩 in the middle of the pavement and we all had to wait as it was picked up - just 🤮 .
Why not take the trouble to train a dog better? Do people not realize what a well trained dog looks like? Do they have no clue? It means everyone can relax. We had a dog who was perfectly trained when I was little - but there was no expectation that she had to be brought wherever we went!
