To spend £1,600 for a week self catering and cook own meals?

Looking at spending £200 on travel and £1,400 on a little cottage self catering for 6 nights.

This would be a lot of our holiday budget. We’d rent bicycles and cook our own food. Do an old fashioned but romantic holiday rather than staying at a hotel and eating buffet food.

AIBU to do this when £1,600 could pay for a cheap holiday somewhere less upmarket.

Where? Is the location worth it to you?

Not if you want to and can afford it - why would it be unreasonable to have a holiday the way you want it?!

We spend way more on self catering accommodation in this country as we have 3dc and want them to have their own rooms like they do at home. We usually end up in a place that sleeps 10 when there are just 5 of us to ensure all our needs are met - mind you we do very little in the way of self catering except breakfast for ds. We much prefer eating out or if we’re relaxing in for the evening, a takeaway!!

We're basically doing juts that

Expensive holiday cottage an hour away from us

Meals will be a combination of self - catered and restaurants

It’s in a nice area of Menorca. We could save a lot by renting in another town but we want to stay in a naice area

Why would this be unreasonable? It’s cheaper than most holidays. Overseas holidays have become insanely expensive recently, especially if you are going in the school holidays. Rental prices for self catering in the U.K. are ridiculous too, but on the whole they’re still cheaper than going abroad at the moment. Every time I price up flights for all of us even at the cheapest Ryanair or EasyJet rates, the compulsory add-ons make it at least £900 for a family of three before you even get to accommodation!

And even bargain package holidays are equally expensive once you have to go in the school holidays. We haven’t been away in so long, I was shocked recently by the prices and to realise most people are now spending multiple thousands of pounds on even just quite basic family holidays.

Why do you have to eat buffet food in a hotel? Couldn't you stay at one that has a proper restaurant, or is in an area where you can walk to nice restaurants?

Personally I quite like s/c cottage holidays. If we just want saucisson cheese and champagne one night, we have it, or fish and chips, or something fancy from Cook. We go out for dinner if we feel like it.

I always spend a bit more on accommodation and a bit less on food/ activities because for me a holiday is very much about chilling at "home" after doing some touristy activities .
