Where I live nearly everyone has their ears plugged.....it makes me feel nervous . AIBU to think it's best to have all senses alive when walking busy streets? or am I being too panicky? Xxx

Yep, I like to be in control and I like to hear what's going on around me. I like to hear the faintest rustle of leaves or birdsong in the middle of the city. I sometimes like to hear other people's conversations too. I would feel cut off from reality otherwise. There is also an element of safety.

I use my earphones to make calls and listen to messages without having my phone in my hand. If my phone’s in my pocket I’m much more alert to my surroundings than if I’m looking at the screen, I’ve seen too many phone snatchings to walk along looking at it!

I've not really noticed it out and about but ds and dh both listen to music with noise cancelling headphones all the time at home and it's so annoying if you need to get their attention doe something.

I like to be situationally aware when I'm travelling/out and about, so don't use headphones/listen to music/watch videos unless it's a very long journey.

I like the one ear approach- my left ear is crap anyway so I shove my earbud in that one - I do only listen to podcasts though

You can get over-the-ear-and-outside buds that hook over the top of the ear. The comparatively larger speakers are better quality while allowing all surrounding sound in.

Yeah, it does seem odd that so many people are uncomfortable of being in silence - they've always got to be listening to something, rather than having a bit of time away from from music, podcasts, whatever.

For some of us, the only bit of peace we get is our headphones when we can’t get silence.

I enjoy silence but there are not many places that are silent or quiet depending on where you live.

There are also a lot of us that wear earphones/headphones on with nothing playing so we can be left alone and often it works.

I quite often end up using my earbuds to shut out the sound of other twats who don't have them. And as my brain is never quiet I actually find it easier to muse and ponder with something peaceful playing, rather than my internal jukebox being a prick.

Enjoying these responses. Interesting . Definitely 100 % agree with people saying it's better than people playing their music or videos without headphones!!!

I have just found out that these earphones exsist!! They appeal to me as my ear hole is so small even the tiniest thing that comes with the earphones are too big so I keep having to push them in it’s not only uncomfortable but it just means I don’t lose the buds with the over the ear one earphones! My daughter says they’re very unfashionable and look like a hearing aid but I don’t care so long as they don’t keep getting lost and I have to buy new ones. I stupidly bought Airpods I. Black and lost one the first day and I still haven’t found them. I then found some plain in your ear ones from Amazon for around £30 and my daughter said they were better sound quality than her AirPods so what’s the point in spending loads of £££. Enter open ear headphones!! I’ve bought the Conyat air conduction ones from Amazon for £36.99 reduced from £159.99 if you can believe that??!! No where online does it say if these headphones are actually that price originally!! One website ranks them 14th on Amazon, another 3rd. Sometimes it’s impossible to tell unless u can afford the best ones like Bose or Huawei which are the most recommended. I think it’s just a matter of trying them out to see if they suit ur particular requirements. The conyat reviews by customers are all good so I thought let’s give them a go. They’ve only just arrived so I haven’t even opened the box but only time will tell. I’ve bought air conduction as there are problems with bone conduction ones for people like me who have nerve damage in my face and TMJ. Some users may experience discomfort or pressure on their cheekbones, temporal bones, or jaw due to the vibrations from bone conduction headphones. Anyway we’ll see! Hope that helped.

It's in the list above these two posts. If you're reading this you should be able to scroll up and see it. I see new posts at the bottom rather than the top but if you prefer it the other way around you can go into your settings and change it.
