To spend £700 on acupuncture

So a bit of back story. I've had pain in the side of my head on and off for the good part of a decade (maybe longer). 5 years ago when I had my first baby the pain got a lot worse and long story short was diagnosed with TMJ disorder, basically my jaw is the problem. I went to the local dental hospital, they had my dentist make me a guard to wear at night. I wore it for honestly like 6 months straight but it didn't work and was left with basically they could only offer me a course of diazapam which I refused as I was still BF and didn't want to be knocked out overnight for my baby. The dentist didn't give me any other alternative. Since my second baby the pain has really ramped up to the point that I have a pain in the side of my head constantly. Sometimes it's a dull pain and sometimes it knocks me for six. I've been to my GP to ask for a scan because I thought maybe it's something more? I was sent to a NHS physio but it's not helped, she then referred me to oral medicine about 6 months ago and still no sign of an appointment (she also prescribed amatriptiline which doesnt work either). I've tried massages as well but nothing helps or if it relieves the pain, it only lasts a small while.

Today at my wits end I went for an acupuncture session, I think it's definitely did something but it's my first time and the man had a heavy accent and didn't explain very much (maybe its my fault for not asking questions). After the treatment I felt a lot looser, I could brush my hair without feeling discomfort but I still have stiffness in the side of my neck (it's not my jaw that hurts but the pain in the side of my head above my ear and also just in front of my ear as well as my neck). He basically said that it would take x14 sessions to fix the problem. That's once a week at £50! It's a lot of money but spoke to DH and he said we can make it work if it might help me but I'm so dubious to try something else that just doesn't solve the problem and waste money that we could really use. I've already spent £100 on the mouth guard plus lots of money on massages etc. I feel absolutely helpless and frustrated. Would it be unreasonable to spend that money knowing that it might not do anything at all? I've never been for acupuncture but they put the needles around my face/head/neck and then attached them to machine and I could feel small electric pulses a bit like a tiny tens machine - is this normal? I just don't know what to do!

Pay per session. Do not commit so much in one go.

LuckyCharmz · 02/05/2025 22:37

I like acupuncture but don’t like the sound of this particular acupuncturist. A good one would not be saying it will take 14 sessions?

TheGoogleMum · 02/05/2025 22:37

Some people swear by acupuncture but it depends what it's for a bit i think. I agree with pay per session that way you aren't committed if it isn't working

giddyauntie123 · 02/05/2025 22:40

I think trust your instinct.
It sounds like you got something out of the session.
Why not spend £700 on your health you are worth it and deserve it.

Also, have you tried any other alternative therapies?

BorderTerrierTimesThree · 02/05/2025 22:43

Have tried Botox? I’m sure I’ve read it can work well for TMJ, might be worth some research, still expensive I know.

How many sessions would you think were normal? Do you feel an instant affect after just one session? I'm really out of my depth with acupuncture. He did say that it was quite bad (which I know of course!)

I've only read about it being done in the masseter muscle which is not where I'm getting the pain? It also is a pricy gamble. I've heard works for some and not for others plus have to go through private dental consultations etc...

I agree with this,it's helped me a lot on the past and I've had it from NHS physios but no one said how many sessions up front. A good one will ask you you reacted to the previous session and tailor the next session accordingly. Pay by session and see how you go.

Kingsleadhat · 02/05/2025 22:52

It sounds like you've responded well to your first treatment so it is worth having a course of treatment but maybe not with this guy. Go for a second opinion elsewhere. 14 is a strangely precise number of sessions, especially as results vary from client to client.

Edinburghuni · 02/05/2025 22:55

ive heard a lot of good things about acupuncture, but I think I’d be tempted to find out more about this chap and his credentials. Maybe he is so experienced he knows it will take x sessions to cure but it does sound a bit iffy, especially if the money is up front.
maybe try another acupuncturist and see what they say?

this - I am a massive acupuncture fan but anyone saying you need X sessions is dubious especially 14.

I know the pain you refer to as I had it recently - ear bone pain gp checked me out to ensure no bone infection I was beside myself in agony.

one session cranial oesto resolved it.

if I was you seek recommendations for professionals near you who help with tmj pain -

also I find I have wax making things worse so get my ears microsuctioned regularly.

I did once do 10 sessions with an acupuncturist for ear pressure - totally rip off turned out it was wax build up.

Can you tell me more about cranial osteopath? The thought of them moving your skull about make me feel queasy!

For everyone say 14 sessions seems too precise...I get that which is why I'm a bit sceptical. Although saying that it's a Chinese medicine shop and it's been there for decades. The man said he had treated people with TMJ before and even some who couldn't have their face touched it was so sore. So maybe he is very experienced? I definitely wouldn't pay the whole sum up front.

Since I had the acupuncture I felt a mixture of achey but also much looser muscles. That night I didn't wake up with pain at all (I think sometimes my muscles spasm during the night and it wakes me up). I don't think I'm cured, I still have sensitivity in my head and neck but I've been able to touch my head without it causing pain.

Out of curiosity for those who have had a course of acupuncture before how many time did you have to have it before you were cured? Were you actually cured? So curious to know of others experiences!

Keep getting treated until you are better. I would not necessarily believe it will take as long as 14 weeks.

Perhaps go weekly for 8 weeks then every 2 weeks to make it more affordable.

I suspect the acupuncturist has one eye on his mortgage in saying this!

Pleased to think it is helping though. I think alternative medicine can sometimes really help.
