Ice bucket challenge

So it seems the ice bucket challenge (from circa 2014) is having a resurgence! I’ve seen a few videos of people doing it but wasn’t even sure what it was for. My kids school have now posted a video of a teacher being drenched “to raise awareness for mental health”.
No links to any forms of support or charities people can donate to. No insight around the complexities of it or strategies to cope.
Aibu to think that these challenges don’t actually do anything to raise awareness of mental health, and are actually just a bit of pointless fun and should be posed as such?
Who in 2025 is unaware of mental health issues and how is seeing a bucket of water chucked over someone’s head supposed to educate them?

YABU - these challenges are great for raising awareness
YANBU - they’re a bit cringe and don’t actually do anything for the causes they’re supposedly supporting

I feel the same way as I did first time around - colossal waste of water, fishing for likes under the guise of charity. Just a knobbish thing to do tbh.

The last one in 2014 made 7.2 million for MND
This time it is for MIND

It's just kids 'nominating' their mates to have cold water thrown on them. Nothing to do with raising awareness or money for charity. It's like a chain email.

XenoBitch · 02/05/2025 20:24

I have seen Mind are using the ice bucket challenge to raise awareness this time.
They say to upload a video, and make a donation. Which as a charity, they would be encouraging.

One that always had me scratching my head was the no make-up selfies for breast cancer awareness. That wasn't even tied to a charity.... just lots of bare faces and tagging other people to do the same.

My son was nominated, did it last week and donated £20 to MIND online. His friends all donated too.

It will be interesting to see if they post a statement about a surge in donations.

And that’s brilliant, there was a fundraiser attached to it and MND was probably not widely known about. But no one I’ve seen so far have been linking to any charities.

Ah, well that’s good. None of the ones I’ve seen have suggested a charity donation

No, last time it was actually raising money, this time all the kids I know who have been doing it have merely been raising 'awareness of mental health'. No money involved.

Well, the mental health charity MIND have posted on their social media about an ice bucket challenge. Not their fault if the people doing it are not actually linking it to them.

DanglingMod · 02/05/2025 20:34

Yep. Just kids chucking water over each other at school, filming it and trying to get out of lessons to dry off, as far as I can see...

Ok so while the no make up selfies one wasn't started as a charity thing it quickly turned in to one and raised £2million for cancer research. Me and my sisters took part in that one (we all donated some money alongside it) and one of my sisters did the original ice bucket challenge.

That is good. I just saw lots of faces and no mention of donating. But it looks like that is what OP and a few others are on about on this thread.

I haven't seen any ice bucket challenges yet... only the original post from MIND.

Probably because you're not a teen. It's all the rage in secondary schools at the moment, particularly with the nice weather.
