Can we salvage this?

I think this can be salvaged. Partner says get rid.

What can I do to spruce it up? Context - garden furniture left outside for 3 years with no treatment or care.

You can salvage that! Sand it down and then oil/varnish/paint for whatever finish you want.

NuffSaidSam · 02/05/2025 19:03

It depends. Is the damage just cosmetic or is the wood rotten?

Bestfadeplans · 02/05/2025 19:04

Looks like one I had. Rotten and fell apart

Whowhatwhere21 · 02/05/2025 19:05

Mines been outside for almost 8 years treated sporadically. Last time I oiled it was about 4 years ago 😅 I jetwashed it down this year to get all the grime off, once dried I sanded with one of those little mouse sanders, 60 grit paper, then again with 120 grit I think. I've not long oiled it and it's come up lovely!

How sturdy is it?
Would you be happy sitting on the chairs or putting stuff on the table?
Because that's your answer.

If it's ok, I'd give it a pressure wash, then paint it with a couple of coats of cuprinol shades.

No it’s knackered

SouperLou · 02/05/2025 19:23

Cheers all!

So the wood is firm - I can’t see any rotten parts I don’t think? Wouldn’t it feel soft and break apart when prodded? Cos that’s not happening. Table is a bit loose but I think a tighten of the screws will help.

Right I will give it a chance and if it doesn’t last til next summer then time to reinvest.

any particular grit sand paper recommendations?

Just saw the grit recommendations after I posted. That’s great! Thanks for the help!

That looks rotten. I had a deck like that and one day DH stepped on it and his foot went right through it. We replaced it with a composite deck and never looked back.
