What is your choice of bedding

This is not a problem & obviously it's down to personal preference, but I'm curious if I'm doing it wrong. We have just a duvet & a couple of pillows each. No top sheet under the duvet & no bedspread/throw. Should there be a top sheet? I see so many photos of luxury beds that have all thus stuff. Dh says no to all this extra stuff as it'll all just get kicked onto the floor, resulting in more stuff to tidy up.

We have 4 pillows and a light duvet, but I’m always cold so a blanket over the top.

squashyhat · 02/05/2025 17:44

Same as you OP with optional blanket in the winter.

driedgrasses · 02/05/2025 17:46

How can you be doing it wrong though? There is no right or wrong, you just do what suits you.

Me and dh have separate bedding because he runs cold and I'm like a blast furnace. I have to have all cotton (no polycotton). No duvet, just a homemade calico throw or perhaps a cotton throw and three pillows. A blanket on in the colder weather. Dh has a single duvet and about 10 blankets.

Bottom sheet, duvet cover, all white Egyptian cotton. In the deepest depths of my northern winter I get out my 13 tog duvet, rest of year it's a 4.5 tog.

@driedgrasses I have to admit, being newly retired I have a lot more time on my hands. Trying to give our home a more luxurious feel & look

Fair enough. My setup definitely doesn't look luxurious 😂

MoistVonL · 02/05/2025 17:52

Duvet one size bigger than the bed. Two pillows each. 600+ thread count as a minimum- high thread count is so lovely.

In winter, a large wool blanket across the top because our bedroom gets very cold.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 02/05/2025 17:52

No top sheet when duvet is on.

WWomble · 02/05/2025 17:56

No top sheet, just something to get tangled I and prolong making the bed!
Egyptain cotton bedding and muslin blankets for summer nights.

Runmybathforme · 02/05/2025 18:00

Egyptian cotton sheets and pillow cases and a top sheet. It feels very luxurious.

Vaxtable · 02/05/2025 18:01

Duvet and pillows but I do have a throw as well as it matches the curtains, it does get dumped on the floor at night but does make the room look nicer when the bed is made each morning

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 02/05/2025 18:04

I hate duvets....I can't regulate my temperature.
I have a sheet, cotton cellular blanket and a thin bedspread on top. Perfect!!
I can snuggle up or throw off a layer as required.

Van34 · 02/05/2025 18:08

Oh I love a top sheet. We have a couple of very nice quality ones (I think 1000 thread count) they are lovely and weighty but still cool. I love being able to snuggle down when I get in bed but then throw the duvet back in the early hours when I get hot.
I never find it tangles up even with DH thrashing about (god knows what he's doing sometimes).
It looks so nice with the top sheet folded over the duvet WHEN the bed is made.

PonyPatter44 · 02/05/2025 18:08

For me, "luxurious " would mean nicer bedding, not more bedding. We have winter and summer duvets, with really good quality duvet cover sets, and nice pillows. I like feather pillows, DH prefers synthetic ones. In the winter we have a massive very expensive wool blanket on the bed as well.

I don't like that weird look with 3543287 cushions on the bed and extra sheets everywhere.

protectthesmallones · 02/05/2025 18:16

Cotton if possible tightly fitted. A simple duvet cover, good quality 100% soft cotton, no embroidery. I hate top sheets as I fight all night and get tangled.

Blarn · 02/05/2025 18:18

Well, I have just come back from holiday where the nights were about 16c and the bed had a topsheet and one of those embroidered throw/coverlet things on. And I did not sweat. Even after a few glasses of wine and a few pints. So I have changed our light duvet to a topsheet and a handmade quilt that I had and it's wonderful, I am now exploring the world of quilts, throws etc.

Also going to try a wool duvet as I do like a heavy top layer.

amooseymoomum · 02/05/2025 18:20

5 pillows 3 for me 2 for him pure cotton bottom sheet duvet on top covers for duvet I am not too fussed what sort got all sorts of covers but no top sheet have tried it but with a fidgety partner, it ended up in a tangle under the duvet. if its cold in winter may put a throw on but that usually ends up being chucked off as my partner is always boiling hot. cannot be bothered with faffy pillows and bed covers

TokyoKyoto · 02/05/2025 18:22

I have 100% linen - I just like the feel of it. It's slightly rough and quite substantial. Holds colour differently to cotton.

4 pillows and 2 large, square pillows for angling under knees and arms. I had a frozen shoulder for a while and sore hips. Bliss to be able to place them just the way I wanted.

I don't do a top sheet under the duvet because I find it a bit cold and uncomfortable. I think it dates from the time when bedding was blankets and an eiderdown on top.

maggiecate · 02/05/2025 18:25

Wool duvet, mattress topper and pillow - brilliant for temperature regulation, it’s warm in winter and cool in summer. High thread count fitted sheet, cotton duvet cover. I run hot so breathability is important.

isitmeamithedrama · 02/05/2025 18:39

I have 4 pillows, fitted sheet and duvet. I used to have pillows and blankets to “dress the bed” but they spent more time on the floor than the bed!
I do insist on Egyptian cotton bedding as my luxury item. Recent 1000 TC and its like sleeping on silk

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 02/05/2025 18:43

Just me in my bed. I have

4 pillows, 1 memory foam, 1 'side sleeper'/box pillow, 2 super squishy ones. I mix and match them depending on... actually no idea what. But sometimes some are comfy, other times they aren't.

Double feather duvet.

Weighted blanket, single bed size

Electric blanket folded in half to make a "pocket" for my feet. I suffer with cold feet and sometimes that's the only way to get them warm

Fleece blanket for sensory input.

I don't sleep under all of those unless it's really cold, usually curl myself around the duvet and have the weighted blanket over me.

BCBird · 02/05/2025 18:50

Dorma Egyptian cotton fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillow then duvet- live alone. I have a runner and two matching cushions. I treated myself during lockdown. Live alone, was unable to.see my partner due to restrictions. It perked me up. I like having a sheet over me - saves work as I don't always wash the duvet cover every time I change the bed. 😃

Gimpee · 02/05/2025 20:58

We spend third of life in bed so I think we should get best bed and best quilt pillows

Eenameenadeeka · 02/05/2025 21:06

We always had top sheets growing up, and I never had a problem with them getting tangled. But my husband and children must move about a lot or something, and the blankets end up everywhere and the top sheets never stay in place. So I just use a fitted sheet and a comforter that has the warm inner but can wash the whole thing.

mondaytosunday · 02/05/2025 21:07

I have fitted sheet, two pillows and a washable lightweight duvet (I think tog 4). In winter I do put a snuggly velvety duvet cover on it but that comes off in Spring. The sheets needs to be at least 400lpi and 100% cotton.
