What time is 'mid afternoon'?

Told a friend it was fine to pop in today to collect something she needed to borrow. She said she'd be here 'mid afternoon'.

I assumed she meant 2pm to 3pm.

But it's now 3:45.

I need to go out to run a few errands.

What time would you assume was meant by 'mid afternoon'?

(Not asking what I should do or is she a CF or anything! It's fine, we r good mates, I've called her but she's not answering. I'm not too bothered about the solution/what to do etc ... Just wondering if I had misunderstood 'mid afternoon'!)

2:30-3:30 I’d say
Between noon & 2:30 I’d say early afternoon.
From 3:30 I’d say late afternoon.

But it’s seasonal for me, because in winter I’d call 4pm evening. But in summer 6:30pm.

You start a whole thread about what time is mid afternoon but you won’t message and ask her directly what time she will come?

GRex · 02/05/2025 16:17

2-3pm, up to 4pm if stretching it.
How good a friend? I would just text "Can't get hold of you and it's getting late, so I'm just quickly nipping out until 4.30pm, call me if you arrive before then as I'm nearby".

Sorry, I missed that you tried to call her. Just go about your day and let her message you instead.

Mid afternoon at 14-15 but I’d accept 16, irrationally. Disagree with previous poster who says evening starts at 17. For me it’s 18 and the 17-18 spot is undefined, a liminal state 😉

Knittedfairies2 · 02/05/2025 16:23

@banivani 5pm is prevening...

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 02/05/2025 16:24

2 - 3pm x

mugglewump · 02/05/2025 16:25

Mid - 3 to 4:30
Early - before 3
Late - after 4:30

PumpkinScarf · 02/05/2025 16:26

I’d expect 2-3 but maybe 2-4 erring on the side of caution.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 02/05/2025 16:33

230-330pm

GoldBeautifulHeart · 02/05/2025 16:46

I'd have said 2 to 3 but 2 to 4 seems most reasonable.

This is why I need exact times.

Exasperated24 · 02/05/2025 16:50

I’d have said 2-3 but would wouldn’t be too annoyed if it was anytime between 1:30-3:30.

mathanxiety · 02/05/2025 17:04

Any time from 2.30 to 4.30, I'd say.

CarpetKnees · 02/05/2025 17:05

I'd say around 3pm but if someone told me that were going to pop in, and it was a day when I needed to run some errands, I would have said, "That's fine, but I will need to be out at some point, are you likely to be here before 2.30 (in which case I will go out afterwards) or is it likely to be after 3.30 (in which case I will do my errands after lunch)?"

As in, it doesn't matter, but would be helpful to know approx time they are aiming for.

Viviennemary · 02/05/2025 17:09

About 3 until 4.

Shessweetbutapsycho · 02/05/2025 17:09

2-3

ManchesterGirl2 · 02/05/2025 17:11

3pm, definitely :D

user2848502016 · 02/05/2025 17:34

2-3.30 ish

First thought was 4pm before reading any comments. Now I'm reading comments I'm overthinking it and no longer sure. So I'm gonna say 4pm.

This. I'm amazed at people saying 2pm - that's "after lunch" to me!

Scampuss · 02/05/2025 19:09

12-2 early afternoon
2-3 mid afternoon (+/- 30 minutes either way to be on safe side)
3-5 late afternoon

Then at 5 it becomes evening.
