Would you change primaries?

Dc is in year 2, might be neurodivergent and has been threatened by another neurodivergent kid in his class. The school have made lots of noises but not much has changed. This has been going on since the start of the year. Would it be unreasonable to ask for DC to change class next year or even to change schools? I've spoken to DC and he doesn't want to as he'll miss the two girls he's started playing with over the last couple of months. However, it feels like his day to day experience is one of threat from the other child - alongside having his two friends. I dont feel like the school leadership is all that great, the next head is quite ineffective. What would you recommend?

What kind of threat?

In terms of what kind of threat, the other child can be violent and has lashed out and hit my child, more than once. He's also threatened my kid's friends, name calling, wrote my child' name on a piece of paper and repeatedly punched it. General intimidation. The other kid has been an issue in the class ever since he's joined the school in year 1. This stuff isnt going on daily but often enough and has been going on this the autumn.

I'd ask for another meeting with the HT and SENCO and ask "what they are doing to keep your child safe". That's their obligation, and they need to show you how they are doing it. They need a measurable plan.

Don't move school just yet. Especially if your DC isn't keen.

@Somuchfree I just dont feel like the school are interested in such a meeting. I asked for a meeting and a plan in early March but that never got passed on from SLT to HT. HT said that they will look into it but that was early last week, since then, nothing.

Then ask again and note every email, letter, phone call. Contact the chair of governors if you don’t get a response.

If your child doesn’t want to move, I’d be wary of doing that, but it’s not unreasonable to ask how your child’s safety will be ensured in school. Maybe they will mix the classes for September and it would equally be reasonable to request that he’s in a different one.

Nah OP, you need to jump on this. School need to buck their ideas up and get on top of it. I’d phone them now and give them until close of Monday to have the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) call you back. This is often the head or deputy in a primary. A proper plan for monitoring and keeping your child safe. If you don’t get that very quickly next week, then complain to Head. If that goes nowhere, contact the chair of governors and ask for a meeting with the link safeguarding governor. I don’t think you’ll have to go that far - be firm, precise and persistent now and it’ll likely get sorted v quickly.
