Parking Situation - neighbours

Hi all

We got some new neighbours in a couple of months ago. The house they moved into was extensively renovated, and the garden was converted to a drive way to be able to accommodate a car/van etc.

The neighbour runs a business. He has 2 large vans and one 4x4. They aren't ultilising their driveway.

For context, we have a small residential parking area outside the houses for 8x houses. Only one of those houses doesn't have a car.

Its now got to a stage where elderly neighbours cannot park as either one of their large vans or their car is using all the room.

Its getting to the point now where neighbours seem to be waiting for them leaving then parking right outside their house to make a point.

AIBU to think they should be at least parking their car in the driveway, to be considerate for other neighbours in the area?

Thankfully, it isnt affecting me as I live on the opposite end to them.

As with all parking posts, we need a diagram.

Park on their driveway. It's not illegal to park there, but it would be illegal for them to block you in and prevent you from getting off their drive.

Whammyyammy · 02/05/2025 09:12

Seems strange to put a drive in and not use it. As frustrating as it is, if they're parking on public land there is nothing you can do.

Bunnyisputbackinthebox · 02/05/2025 09:13

Some areas don't allow business vehicles to park up near residential homes.. Check with the council

Abra1t · 02/05/2025 09:14

Are commercial vehicles permitted to park on the street?

Obviously it would be better to ask him to be more considerate first, but you could find he's not supposed to be parking his vans on the road.

We live in an area that attracts a lot of ramblers. Someone did this to a house in the village and it all kicked off as apparently the engine oil of parked car had been drained and the car massively broke down when they left.
Was unable to be proved etc, police involved but nothing happened

I’d keep my nose out if it’s not affecting you. But if you want to do a diagram we’ll all have a look Grin

UniqueRedSquid · 02/05/2025 09:35

It sounds like it would be helpful for them to use the driveway but if it’s a public road with no restrictions then they’re under no obligation to and may park on the road if they choose to.

BangersAndGnash · 02/05/2025 09:42

Has anyone asked them to use their drive?

You know, used their words and spoken to them in a polite, friendly but direct way and explained the problem they are causing?

Rather than playing passive aggressive Tetris with their cars?

Rewis · 02/05/2025 09:43

So there is 8 residential parking spaces that are first come, first serve? So now that they are using several parking spaces it means that there are residents who can't park their car there at all?

ThisDogBarks · 02/05/2025 11:23

Had a similar issue with this guy who ran his own business down my road. Our road is quite narrow, and hed park his business vans along it, practically blocking the road. We asked multiple times to remove it, he didnt, so i got a private tow company to remove it for us, as it was all on double yellows.

SparklyGlitterballs · 02/05/2025 11:36

I'd check your council website to see if they have any restrictions on parking commercial vans in residential roads. Some councils ban them eg between 6:30pm to 8am the following day.

If the van owners are belligerent and aggressive, it can be risky for women alone, or elderly people, to “out” themselves as the person with the complaint. I certainly wouldn’t want them knowing where I live.

The bullies have a built-in advantage.

amigafan2003 · 02/05/2025 18:59

Are you being unreasonable to expect them to park on thier driveway?

No.

Is there anything you can do about it?

No.

Emmz1510 · 02/05/2025 19:02

Other than try politely ask them to use their drive I’m not sure there is much you can do.
‘Hi, I was wondering if you could possibly try to use your drive to park your vehicles? Where you are parking them currently is causing problems with on street parking’.

TequilaNights · 02/05/2025 19:06

How new is the drive and what is it made from?

Stuffedbysparky · 02/05/2025 19:29

Is there a covenant preventing him from parking his vans on his drive? We have one on our estate and the builder of the estate lives here and makes sure people observe the covenants.

scotsmum2015 · 02/05/2025 20:49

They sound very selfish if it hasn’t occurred to them but tell them it’s causing an issue and give them a chance to rectify it. If they don’t I’d definitely be checking with local council

TheHerboriste · 02/05/2025 21:35

You could post an anonymous note. In case they are arseholes.

What a shame.

elfendom · 03/05/2025 00:50

are the spaces marked out for each house; do you have a diagram? do any other house have driveways or is it all a mass residential parking area?
