Collagen and tumours

Look it's not really an AIBU but genuinely had no idea where to put it.
So I saw talk here, there and everywhere about collagen. Researched, procrastinated and eventually went with one company. I told my Mum (78 had cancer twice but no issues for well over 10 years) about it and Igot enough for both of us for approx 6 weeks. She has arthritis and has been struggling with her shoulders in particular.
Our goal was joint improvement and if the face dropped some wrinkles then whoopidoo.
Here's the issue, apology long backstory.
Today I saw a social media post from a woman taking collagen and her cancer has returned. She has now read that collagen can promote tumour growth. I have googled it myself and it's inconclusive as seeing some thoughts that it could promote tumour growth and some say could put a barrier around it.
I am now a bit demented worrying about it. I think when a family member has had cancer it's always in your head isn't it.
Has anyone heard anything about this?
Mumsnet always seems to have informed people to advise.

Good grief I have just started taking collagen. I had never heard anything about this!

Addicted2Sugar · 01/05/2025 23:23

I know. I feel like I spent ages researching marine and bovine and hydrolysed this that and the other. 4 weeks in and this!

I am trying to rationalise that it doesn't cause cancer but if one were to have a tumour it could maybe possibly accelerate growth, for god's sake.

OP can you post links to the sources you are relying on which suggest taking collagen supports cancer?

DollydaydreamTheThird · 01/05/2025 23:31

If it's some shit on YouTube then take no notice. Click bait so you'll watch it and they'll get some money out of it. Ignore.
If not pls share the links.

It’s deeply irresponsible to write such a scaremongering post with zero actual medical evidence included. Reporting.

Glitterybee · 01/05/2025 23:38

I’ve read that before too! It put me off trying collagen

It wasn't a click bait on you tube. I can't remember which but it was one of the gazillions of FB groups I am on.

Well, there may not be conclusive medical evidence that it’s harmful, but then there’s unlikely to be conclusive evidence it’s safe either, stuff like this just isn’t tested to the same rigorous standards as things like actual medicines.

I’m no scientist, but my personal instinct is that it doesn’t feel natural to ingest large quantities of collagen from other animals, so I’m not going to be risking it.

Addicted2Sugar · 01/05/2025 23:40

I had literally just ordered 6 months supply of it and hour before!

This would narrow it down when searching for which group you saw it on surely?

friendsonly · 01/05/2025 23:43

There’s not enough research either way or on other long term risks but personally I wouldn’t take the risk

Narrow what down?

Because everything on Facebook is true as well. 😂
Can you not get your mum to email her consultant's secretary for advice on this? Better to come from a medical professional than the internet.

Addicted2Sugar · 01/05/2025 23:53

I am definitely going to get her to contact the consultant, thank you.

I honestly thought that I had researched so thoroughly and found something that seemed to be helping - bloody buggering shite. I am not destined to be ache free with a smooth face 😂

I have just re read comments and note the one accusing of scaremongering. That wasn't the intention but I would hate someone to worry (a bit like I have been doing on my mum's behalf) after seeing this. I will ask admin to take it down, if that is a thing!
