16 month old scared of escaltor

Hello im asking for some advice and also if this relates to anyone else's small child
I have noticed on the last two occasions when using the escalator my son starts panicking and crying uncontrollably, he has never done this prior. Is there anthing to be worried about? He is almost 17 months old. He was the same in a lift recently.

Thankyou for any help given

I had a child that was terrified of escalators. Also had one who hated walking under railway bridges or going on the top deck of a bus. And one who was afraid of the Teletubbies of all things. They all got over them eventually.

Fairly common for toddlers to be randomly afraid of things, I'd say.

LeopardPrintTits · 01/05/2025 22:13

I think this is normal, they freak me out a bit and I know a friend’s mum refuses to use them at all!

thenightsky · 01/05/2025 22:13

I remember being terrified of both lifts and escalators as a child. I insisted on using the stairs until at least age 10 I think.

doodleschnoodle · 01/05/2025 22:14

I think loads of kids are scared of escalators! My 6yo has only just got the hang of going on them without drama! She and my 2yo aren’t keen on lifts either.

He's only 16months so still very young. He might have gone through a developmental leap lately and he more aware of things and how they make him feel (I'm not articulating this very well but Google leaps).
I'm sure in time he will be OK, he's still only a baby really x

Octonaut4Life · 01/05/2025 22:23

My son was scared of them at that age, I used to carry him on them if it was unavoidable to use them. He also had to be carried in lifts. He's 5 and actively enjoys using both now! I wouldn't worry.

ReplacementBusService · 01/05/2025 22:32

Escalators are a bit scary to be fair, even without those1980s adverts about how your foot might get dragged into one and crush you they showed when I was a kid

ReplacementBusService · 01/05/2025 22:34

....for anyone who missed the horror (do not show this to your child!)

Greycatclub · 01/05/2025 22:35

Very normal

tigerlily9 · 01/05/2025 22:36

Pick him up and carry him on. They are scary for his age - he’s only just learned to walk.

WeAreAllBucked · 01/05/2025 22:38

I am 552 months old and I am afraid of escalators. I really would not worry.

MigGril · 01/05/2025 22:41

Use the lift instead it's not worth making him more scared. Even at 17 DD isn't keen on an escalator and will use any other option if available.

parietal · 01/05/2025 22:42

Carry him. Show him that you aren’t scared. He will learn it is ok.

Can i ask what age did this start?

DD was nervous of them and hesitant, meaning even now we carry her up escalators (she’s 4). She’s fine with lifts - in fact she likes them, pressing the buttons, etc.

She is terrified of hand dryers in public toilets. Specifically asks us not to use them. Oddly has no issue with similar noises, like hair dryers or the hoover.

My 2nd youngest hates them, he is autistic but it's probably not why

My DS had a hand dryer thing... hated public loos and we couldn't figure out why until we found a quieter one... doesn't bother him now.

I'm early 50s and have had a lifelong fear of escalators. That tv ad from the late 70s/early 80s where a ragdoll got sucked into one damaged me for life.
