Attending meetings on days off?!

I work as a teacher Mon-Wed, staff meetings are on a Wednesday so I always attend.

There is training day at the end of the year (Monday) that staff will have off. Instead we are completing additional staff meetings throughout the year to make the time up.

The next additional meeting is on a Friday, which I don’t work. I raised this in good will and asked how I could make up the hour. My Headteacher has been really ‘funny’ and said all staff, even part time, are expected to attend. She said she would allow me to make it up as a one off, but in future I need to note down dates and make arrangements. AIBU to think I shouldn’t have to come in for one hour on my day off?!

No - your union will tell you this if you to involve them. And you should be doing a count - are you doing 60% of the 1265 directed hours? If you already going to every Monday meeting and not 60% of them, you are probably doing more than it anyway - they probably owe YOU!

Thank you- that’s exactly what I thought! She said all staff are expected to attend-regardless of if they’re part time. I’m torn because I will benefit from the extra day off as it’s a Monday. I don’t mind making it up- just not on a non-working day!

We would be given the option of attending (and paid) or not attending (no further consequences or catching up).

That's why my school has all its posts filled and great retention!

Obviously it depends where you live? I am in Scotland so might be different where you are but you cannot get asked to come in on your day off unless it's for parent night. It's your HTs obligation to make meetings on days everyone can attend, which sometimes means alternating days.
