To wear a burkini?

AliceMcK · 01/05/2025 00:55

Dose anyone know what would happen if I wore a burkini in France? I understand there has been issues, rightly or wrongly, with religion and wearing burkinis in the past. I’m just wondering if I would be causing problems if I decided to wear one.

For reference, I’m not religious, if I was to choose it would be lapsed catholic, I hate the sun and beach, I go to the beach one day a year for my DDs ( northern English beach), however, we are going to France with DHs family in the summer and expected to spend several days at the beach so I’m looking to find something to cover my very pasty white skin to reduce sun exposure and loving the idea of a burkini.

posting on here for traffic.

Board shorts and rash vest is my go to. If I'm not likely to be straight in the water perhaps a maxi skirt over the top to keep the sun off my legs.

Get a long sleeved rash vest
and long board shorts.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 01/05/2025 08:15

If you’re not wearing it for religious reasons I’d avoid a burkhini as, rightly or wrongly, it could be controversial and cause unwanted attention. I would wear a long sleeve rash vest or swim top and a pair of longer swimming shorts (legging style or baggy whichever you prefer) with a sarong or maxi skirt over. There are plenty of options that don’t involve needing to wear a burkhini and as you’re in France which isn’t known for being the most liberal when it comes to religious dress it seems more sensible to go with one of the alternatives.

Where will you be swimming? Pools run by the French local authorities sometimes have rules on swimwear - this is from Montpellier.

I’m fair skinned too and spent a few years living in a very sunny country with regular high UV .
I found it easy enough to keep in the shade , when I did head to the beach there was also shade there .
I wore a regular swimsuit but with a t shirt or UV shirt / rash vest if I was going in the water .
Any skin that was exposed I slathered on high SPF .
other times I just wore floaty long dresses, always fine cotton or linen plus a wide brim hat

Despite my strong revulsion for clothing described as 'modest', I suppose I do have to thank the cover-up crews for the fabulous range of swimwear on offer these days! You can get any length, any shape and every colour!

OP, unless you're aiming to test the French tolerance for that which is not comme il faut (France always wins, btw) the swim legs + loose rash top seems to be a combo that fits your needs.

If it's going to be hot & sunny, mind you, you can easily go in & out of the water in a lightweight maxi dress. Just stick a spare in your bag in case the wet one doesn't dry as fast as you'd like.

Or a floor-length kaftan?
They are light but very good coveralls at a reasonable price.

Those rules would not necessarily apply on a public beach, though. (For a start quite a few women will be topless!)

SinkToTheBottomWithYou · 01/05/2025 14:41

Don’t wear a burkini in France, they take the no-religious signs quite seriously. At best you will be stared at all the time.
Rash vest + surf shorts (or floaty long skirt over a bikini bottom)

RoadtoVima · 01/05/2025 14:42

I have seen them worn fairly frequently in Greece OP. Don't know about France.

I have a friend who is extremely careful about her skin and has many UV suits that are great for anyone who wants to cover up. Don't think you need a burkini - unless you are covering for religious reasons.

If you don't plan on swimming then full beach cover-ups are very popular and freely available.

MrsJoanDanvers · 01/05/2025 15:01

I wear a rash vest and little shorts-you can swim in them and it’s quick drying.

AliceMcK · 01/05/2025 15:42

Thanks everyone, some great tips I will take on board.

I also dont like how womens swimwear is either just a swimsuit or bikini.

Ive actually started to wear a female swimsuit with mens swim shorts in the beach.

Mens swim shorts are so comfortable. And the small mens sizes, fit women

Whippetlovely · 01/05/2025 18:52

Your being very dramatic. I'm as pale as you can get and still wear normal swim wear on a beach, just use factor 50 and a hat. I think you are attention seeking.

glittercunt · 01/05/2025 18:56

Sports leggings, sports caprice pants or cycling shorts, with a rash vest and good hat?

I sometimes wear the above.

LifeIsGoodish · 01/05/2025 19:37

I wear Islamic swimwear on beach holidays in France, with a hat instead of the hood, and not had any problems. People sometimes look, but nobody has ever said anything or done anything to worry me. I couldn't go on the waterslides at a water park, but that would have been the case whether I wore the dress and loose leggings or a long sleeved rash vest and tight leggings.

TBH in the sea I prefer to swim in rash vest, as the waves can tug at the longer, looser dress. The dress does get hot, especially if it's black, unless I've just been in the water.

Go for it! It's a bit of excitement.

I agree

itbemay1 · 01/05/2025 19:40

Just wear a wet suit

TeamMandrake · 01/05/2025 20:06

This sort of thing is nice, and easy to wear a dress/kaftan over:

If men in France generally can’t even wear baggy trunks and have to wear Speedos, why would a woman be able to wear board shorts and a rash vest or a burkini?

Genuine question!

Masmavi · 01/05/2025 22:17

Burkinis are a bit uncomfortable with their layers and if you’re not wearing one for religious reasons I’d go for a rash vest over a swimsuit/bikini. Unless you’re swimming or snorkelling for hours with your legs stretched out in the sea legs don’t tend to burn easily. I’m presuming they have umbrellas at the beach? Stay under that when not swimming, I normally put a light loose cotton dress with short sleeves over my swimsuit.even under the umbrella. In the sea the rash vest will do most of the sun protection job - I love not having to lather sunscreen on my shoulders and back. Very freeing!

The Speedos rule tends to be for pools rather than beaches I think

Obeseandashamed · 01/05/2025 22:36

I went away on a sunny holiday and remembered that my skin would be uv sensitive due to having has laser hair removal recently. I ordered a few nice cover up suits to protect myself - some were full length and others were capri… they were all from Amazon or a place called Lyra and I was surprisingly impressed with the quality!

AffIt · 01/05/2025 22:45

I'm a pale blue person who wears F50 when gardening at home in Scotland, so while I'm not averse to wearing an ordinary swimsuit at the beach or by the pool, I prefer to be covered when I'm not in the water.

However, it is UNBELIEVABLY difficult to find a throwover that offers decent coverage (i.e., shoulders / full sleeves / at least knee-length). I'm happy enough to use sunscreen on my hands and lower legs and to wear a hat.

If anybody has any suggestions, I'd be delighted (sorry to hijack your thread, OP).
