Vax carpet wash for pets

Mollylegs · 30/04/2025 21:51

Hi sorry to post on AIBU but I was hoping to find a quick answer. I have an old dog who has started weeing in the house. I have paid out a fair amount on getting the carpets cleaned over the last two months as they aren't very old and weren't cheap. I paid for the same company to come out yesterday as she had peed twice in the living room. Before anyone slates me I am riddled with arthritis and can no longer hold the spot washer that I have in my hands at all. I can't get down on the floor easily to scrub it. I have had my girl to the vets and it's just an age thing but its going to keep happening. I have decided I am going to have to invest in a carpet cleaner so I was hoping someone might know if there are any decent carpet cleaners that specifically deal with dog wee, that isn't heavy and I don't have fiddly bits to deal with to use it. I will take my post down if hopefully if anyone answers, sorry if it's not meant to be here at all. Thanks in advance 😞

It is not the actual carpet cleaner that will be for dog wee, it will be the shampoo you use. You can get ones specifically for pet stains.
You can get upright carpet shampooers which are not much different to use than a normal upright hoover. Vax definitely do some.

My dog has the same issue. What I have done is get some cheap washable rugs/mats. And I put puppy pads underneath them. So if my old girl pees on them, I chuck the mat in the washing machine, and the puppy pad absorbs the pee and stops it going down into the carpet.

If you go to the vets they will be able to give the dog something x

Mollylegs · 30/04/2025 22:04

Hi @YeOldeGreyhound I bought a couple of those rugs from amazon but unfortunately she just walks around them and pees at the edge of them. If she pees in a certain spot I try to move the rug to there but she just pees around it. She is basically weeing everywhere so I'd have to try any cover everywhere which is impossible. Its so sad when they get to this point, thank you for replying, I have been on the vax website and they do a platinum pet cleaner but they are so expensive x

OP said they have been to the vets. It is an age thing.

Mollylegs · 30/04/2025 22:07

Hi @Fleetwoodmac23 when I took her when I handed a wee sample in they said there was no infection and basically said deal with it. Is there def something they can do to help? Thank you x

Propalin syrup is what can help with urinary incontinence in older female dogs.

A cheaper carpet shampooer will do. It is mostly about the actual shampoo you use. Vax have a pet specific one.

Mollylegs · 30/04/2025 22:11

Hi @YeOldeGreyhound is that something I have to get from the vet?

OP posts:

I have cats not dogs so not sure on the specific shampoo, but I have one of the handheld Vax pet cleaner things and mum has an upright one also by Vax so hopefully this will be helpful.

Mine is much lighter but a lot fiddlier - it can sit on the stairs which I find really helpful, but mum finds it harder to use because she can't get up from sitting on the floor any more. It's great for spot cleaning and small areas but a ballache for bigger areas or a whole room.

Upright one means cleaning a bigger area - it's impossible to do just one spot as it's upright hoover sized. But both mum and I find it easier to use on the whole - not sure why as they both have one tank for cleaning solution and one for dirty water, and the hose needs rinsing after each use.

I do use my little one often as I have a cat who throws up a lot and one who's had on and off poo issues - it's definitely helped keep my carpets clean.

Hope your girl is ok - I've known a couple of dogs wear nappies for a while although that might be a mad solution!

Yes, you will have to speak to your vet about it. It is not expensive though.

Thank you @YeOldeGreyhound can you tell she's my first dog??!!! She is nearly 16 and I have never dealt with it before, I will look at cheaper carpet cleaners if it s the shampoo that is more important. I love my girl so much but I also don't want my home to feel unclean, I feel quite mean posting this x

Aw, don't feel mean. Our dogs are precious and they get old, and have all the things that come with old age. We just look after them as best we can. We owe them that after a lifetime of love.
I use the Vax pet shampoo, but Pets at Home also stock a range of products aimed at pee etc too. In turquoise bottles. I forget the name, but they are really good. I used to have an elderly cat that peed indoors, and cat pee is the worst! This stuff kept the stink away.

Mollylegs · 30/04/2025 22:34

Hi @hilariousnamehere I have a cat too, I have always had cats but my ex husband was a dog person so we have both. I'm very lucky that none of my cats have ever been too bad its just my poor lovely dog. I struggle to push a hoover around so I use one of those Gtech lightweight things so I'm worried I wouldn't be able to push it around if it were very heavy but like you said the smaller ones are fiddly. The vet said she has seen patterdales live till 18 and my daft dog is still very happy to run around with kids and has life left in her so I just need ro figure out whats best for keeping the house clean. Thanks for your help x

I have a Shark carpet cleaner & it’s a million times better than the Vax I had before. Also, have you looked at dog nappies?

Dog nappies are ok for short term (for in season bitches or after surgery), but they do cause UTIs in female dogs which means more pee etc.

Mollylegs · 30/04/2025 22:40

@YeOldeGreyhound I have cats too but luckily I haven't had any bother with them. Cat pee is grim though so I might have a trip to pets at home. She has been my little rock since my husband left, with not knowing much about dogs I was scared this was getting to the end but hopefully not. I love her so bloody much x

Could you try mats of different material i- or newspaper on kitchen floor? We used to do that with puppies
bless your precious old doggy, hope you get a solution 🙏

Mollylegs · 30/04/2025 22:49

Thank you @JorgyPorgy I have tried the rugs from amazon and puppy pads, I never thought to try newspaper so I'll try anything at this point, I love her so much bless her x

Just looked it up. The range is called 'Simple Solution'

Aw, sounds like she helped you a lot. As out dogs get older, we sometimes have to remind them of their training. It might be worth treating her like a puppy and making a big fuss about peeing outside again etc But it is definitely worth speaking to your vet about propolin syrup as older girls do lose tone as they get older (like human women 😂).

Mollylegs · 30/04/2025 23:09

@YeOldeGreyhound She is a little superstar, I can't bear the thought of anything being really wrong. x

@Mollylegs might be worth asking if anyone you know has one of either type they'd let you try to see how you get on with it - I've let a couple of friends try mine but didn't know they were looking till it came up in conversation!

Mollylegs · 01/05/2025 06:45

Morning @Skippydoodle sorry to bother you, I have just had a quick look on the shark website and it has a lot to say about pet hair but I'm not sure if they are any good for dog urine. Do you have experience of this, thanks.

Hi Molly - yes today 😆. I’m looking after my dad’s elderly dog and he peed on my very new, very deep bedroom carpet! 🙁. It handled it like a pro. Brilliant!
