People visit beaches on warm days - crowds, hell

Never understood this thing when we have warm weather, people think “ooh let’s go to the seaside”.

Roads get clogged, parking is a struggle, massive queues to buy ice cream, food and to
use what few toilets the beach has and super crowded. This is my hell.

Now I'm seeing Tubbs and Edward in a shack at the entrance to the car park, greeting all the day-trippers with, "This is a local beach, for local people. There's nothing for you here."

Haha! Covid lockdown was the best, loads of people griping about people visiting the coast in breach of often imaginary laws and bemoaning their stupidity, at which point it usually became clear that they had done exactly the same stupid thing! “I left home at 4am to get to the beach this morning only to be stuck in 3 hours of traffic and when I got here there was nowhere to park my massive car, nowhere to go to the toilet and crowds of people here who aren’t locals. What is wrong with people…”

Erm I also lived in central London for 10 years so had plenty of that thanks! But guess what when I had enough of it I took the revolutionary step of moving house! Not griping about it “God it’s so awful living in London, all those crowds of people coming in to work, go to shows and art galleries, see world-renowned sights, burying food and drink, taking public transport, having world class medical treatment and socialising. Why won’t they go home- London is for locals!”.

Why should I move away from my home because some people can’t control themselves?

Because you don’t seem to like living there much? Obviously just a thought.

We are lucky enough to live close to a well known beach. However experience has taught me to avoid BH,SH and so on .There are several less known beaches nearby so we use those sometimes .No one owns a place though ,and I will always appreciate not living in a city (grew up in London 1970s) still like a trip there too.

It depends when you go. We tend to get to the beach very early in the morning, have a lovely walk, then sit down around 10:00, have our picnic around midday and leave around 14:00.
At that point, the traffic into the seaside town seems to be at its peak, and that’s the point at which it becomes hell - so just go earlier on the days when it’s been forecast to be good weather…
We’ve experienced this situation at several different beaches around the South Coast (E.g. Brighton, Romney, Camber) over the last few years - but always tend to avoid Bournemouth, as it’s always the one that gets onto the News for overcrowding!

I live in a holiday area and am surrounded by beaches so use them all year round.

I love the beach, in the nice weather we always go down after work - swimming in the sea, paddle boarding, walking the dog, DD rides her pony on the beach

I avoid the main tourist beaches during the school holidays and bank holiday weekends as they are busy - no where to park, queues for the loos, etc, but there are plenty of out of the way beaches, or beaches with no shop/loos which are much quieter, and actually nicer/prettier than the main tourist ones anyway.

So true.

Not always , we went to Studland on a glorious day a few years ago, we had to walk a mile to find somewhere less crowded, to sit down, a lot further than 5 minutes! We had paid a fortune for the carpark so were pretty committed to staying 😃

Lots of us. Those of us who live by the beach are there in all weathers.

You'd probably feel differently making a 3 hour trip though

Talipesmum · 01/05/2025 20:45

Found a picture on the Bournemouth echo paper online - today’s “bustling” beach - looks pretty nice, plenty of room for everyone and in no way packed, rammed, awful crowds. Maybe people who head off to the beach when they can aren’t that daft :-)
