Toddler antibiotics help

My toddler is on her 3rd bout of tonsillitis.

I am hugely struggling getting antibiotics into her. She had trouble with the first two cases taking the antibiotic, but we eventually settled with banana flavour amoxicillin. Didn’t like it but we managed. However she had diarrhoea and a rash.

GP said due to sensitivity, she should avoid penicillin for a couple of years so prescribed clarithromycin.

I have managed three doses.. with great difficulty. But this evening i gave it to her and she heaved it up and was sick everywhere. Tried giving a second dose and sick again.

I cant disguise it, I have tried everything! Ill give it to her it tastes disgusting. But she is soo poorly and needs it to get better.

I have missed tonights dose as I wasn’t risking sick again.

Pleasd help, one desperate Mumma who doesn’t want her 2 year old to have to go in for IV. I think she would quite literally fight them.

Shes 2.5 and very switched on. Its also now caused a huge problem getting her to take calpol and nurofen for her raging temperature.

What are you giving it with? A spoon? A syringe?

I'd speak to GP tomorrow and explain. If she's being sick she's not getting the benefit. There will be an alternative, maybe one that needs a single dose per day or a smaller amount. Feel your pain, I've had to wrestle with my toddler with antibiotics/calpol/nurofen for tonsillitis and its just misersble.

Go back to the doctor. They have others they can prescribe, they might not be the first choice as they are more expensive but they will reluctantly. Mine at that age got a infection, wouldnt take that banana favour amoxcillion. I tried everything. Dr agreed to prescribe something else, which my daughter didnt love but could take. I was told how v expensive it was and "not to drop.the bottle" but it was needed. Call the doctor back and explain. Good luck.

Thank you! We both end up super stressed covered in medicine and sick!

I don’t understand why they don’t make them just even a little bit appealing for children! Ill give them a call tomorrow!

Oh that is so annoying! The price shouldn’t matter when it comes to our babies health! Im sure a hospital stay with IV would cost a lot more too.

Thank you, I will call them in the morning. Hopefully they can give me something tolerable for her.

Is she swallowing it and then being sick? I have not managed to keep down an antibiotic as an adult when I took a liquid antibiotic and I need tablets. (I know she can’t do that, but just saying it may not be deliberate in any way, but a reaction to that medication.)

We had this issue with my toddler a few weeks ago and ended up with her in a&e as couldn’t get antibiotics/calpol/nurofen in to her as she was being sick and just generally awful at taking medicine. Fortunately ended up not even needing antibiotics as it was a bad virus not infection. But we did get prescribed suppository paracetamol instead as she had a raging fever and couldn’t keep anything down- so maybe something worth asking for if it’s bad?
