To not know what to do with an unexpected morning off?

TLDR: husband has just told me he’s taking tomorrow off and will look after our 2 young children so I can do something on my own tomorrow. He laughed when I said I didn’t know what to do! So what would you do with a surprise morning off?

Full story: DS5 was diagnosed with cancer 4 months ago and I’ve taken time off work to care for him. I’ve not had much time to myself since then but am lacking in ideas for how to spend my morning away from the kids.

I’d either have a lie in or get up and go for a swim, depending on my energy levels. Or find a nice coffee shop and a good book.

A museum with a nice coffee shop? Shopping for any clothes or other stuff you need? I don't enjoy shopping with kids in tow, so might take the opportunity! Or just buy a nice book and go get a posh coffee and read the morning away. Sorry to hear about your DS, that must be very hard for you all. Hope he is getting good treatment x

A long walk while listening to an audiobook or a wild swim with a friend would be my choice. Or a book in a lovely coffee shop if you don't fancy being active. Or maybe a massage if you can manage to book one last minute. Enjoy it whatever you decide to do.

I would go for a swim/sauna/steam and linger in a coffee shop with a book afterwards. Enjoy!

Blondebrownorred · 29/04/2025 21:02

I'd go for a long run, a bath then trashy TV

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 29/04/2025 21:04

I'd go rock climbing! But that's just me.

Sometimes when I have time to myself, I like to go for a long walk while listening to an audio book.

Ask a friend out for a cup of coffee?

Have a long lie in a watch TV shows in bed? Or read a book?

SBHon · 29/04/2025 21:07

Stay in bed, order brunch in (and eat it in bed) watch shit tv.

i would get a hair wash and blow dry as I find it so relaxing then have a large coffee and watch the world go by
I’m really sorry about your DS. I hope he is doing well on his treatment plan

Swim, beach time weather permitting.

If weather bad, find a local art gallery to wander through then a nice lunch.

So sorry about your son, I hope his treatment is going well.

Thanks everyone. I had a bit of a lie in and then called my mum to see if she could come and look after the kids for a few hours. My husband and I went for a walk and then had a nice lunch out. I don’t think we’ve done anything together as a couple since DS5 was diagnosed so it was really nice.

Thanks for the kind words about DS5, it’s been an incredible tough few months but he’s responding well to treatment so far.

In this weather it's obvious
Get out In the sunshine somewhere or relax in your garden

So sorry that you and DS have had such a rough time recently. How lovely to hear of supportive DH and DM. You’ve got a good un there!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 30/04/2025 18:35

I’m glad you enjoyed your lunch with DH
couple time is important when you’re going through a difficult time as a family.
