AIBU?

For thinking that the radio should also adhere to the watershed

Dh and I were driving home tonight around 7.00pm. Usually we would dd (aged 6) with us but recently mil has been picking her up from Stagecoach.

Dh likes Radio 4 and usually listens to that artsy type programme, the one with the obscure comedians and singers being interviewed. It finished and the play started. Dh didn't bother to swicth over. Within the 1st 5 minutes the lines "you are pissing me off" and (shouted) "you're a shit" a minute or so later the word shit was repeated.

It wouldn't be allowed on the TV at 7pm so why is it on the radio?

YANBU. I have heard language that wouldn't be allowed on TV at 10am on radio - just grateful I didn't hear "what does that mean mummy?" from the back seat.

Actually, I disagree.

Not everything in the world revolves around children and their needs. Radio 4 is generally considered an adult radio station (in the non-cartoon, sensibele sense of the word!) and I don't think everything should curtail its content just because a child may be listening.

I think TV is different because children watch more of it and it's easier and more attractive for them to turn on.

I disagree. WHy on earth can't adults listen to a programme on Radio 4 in the evening with a little bit of mild swearing because of the fear of a 6 year old listening to it. Just listen to something else if you are that offended.

Why don't we put a watershed on mumsnet until 9pm in case children are sitting reading it with their parents?

I also disagree. I also suspect that your DD has heard those terms before ...

LOL I get your point hercules
but if one person is listening to the radio, everyone in the house can hear it, usually
I would say it is more like someone wandering into your house and starting swearing, then someone on the pc typing it

tbh I think knowing that the radio has unpredictable content, we wouldn't have it on when ds was listening
the news is usually AWFUL and in no way suitable anyway
I guess there are stations which are suitable if you want to listen - and turn off when news time - but not radio 4

Yes, it is different but radio 4 is generally for adults and I think it's too much for everything adult to have to revolve around the odd child that might be in the vicinity whilst the grown ups listen.
I dont watch eastenders and the like because it's not suitable for my 4 year old however I would never expect the programme to change it's content to be suitable for the under 10s.

So that means that we can never have the radio on in the car? What station would you suggest. Classic FM is all very well but sometimes we want a change.

I'm astounded that you all think it is acceptible. Perhaps it is an indication of society today. I'm quite sad that life has come to this.

Eastenders is an adult programme but it wouldn't contain those words. I still think a play like that should have been on later in the evening.

I would be sadder if people couldnt listen to an show on teh radio aimed at adults at 7pm without it being censored heavily incase small children were listenng to it.
Eastenders contains far worse things than a couple of mild expletives...
