School trip

Hi.. looking for some opinions on whether or not to raise this with the school..so my 9yr old today went on a school trip. They were split in different groups(2 classes so around 60kids in total) and asked which hill they would like to climb, one was a lot steeper than the other and my ds chose the less steep one.. all fine.

There were 3 instructors and 3 teachers attending I believe, one of the teachers chose the less steep one too to go with my ds and only one other child chose that route too, who then changed their mind and went with the majority.. and then the teacher decided to go neither and went around the mountain/hill instead, leaving my ds to climb by himself? And just told him to be careful.. he did say he was a little scared and slipped at one point but found a big stick to help him.
Yes he's home and safe thankfully 🙏but I'm a bit confused as to why he was left to go by himself? Or why they didn't just encourage him to go with the majority if no one was willing to go with him.

AIBU to think at least 1 of the teachers or instructors should have gone with him?

Sorry for the long post and thanks if you've read this far! 😄😊

Are you making a mountain out of a molehill? Summit doesn't seem quite right here.

It's a bit puzzling as to why the teacher didn't go with him but they were obviously confident he could do it.

Yea that's what I was thinking but true maybe they were happy he could do it

How big was this hill?

This is what I'm not quite sure about as where they went there is a few hills so I don't know exactly which one he climbed .. I don't want to overreact and I'm never one for complaining to school for things or in general

Was he out of their sight and care in a public place?

There's been some - ahem - 'miscommunication' here.

There is no way either a teacher nor an outdoor instructor sent a 9 year old off to climb a hill by themselves.

BakelikeBertha · 29/04/2025 00:34

Sounds to me like the teacher was a lazy sod, and couldn't be arsed to climb the hill themself, so just left your DS to get on with it. Not ideal, but not the end of the world either in my opinion. A 9 year old should be able to climb any hill without problem, unless he is disabled in any way. I really don't think it's worth mentioning to the school OP.

hoarahloux · 29/04/2025 00:34

Did you witness this or are you going by your 9 year old's account?

I'm absolutely certain he was not left totally unsupervised at an outdoor retreat to climb an enormous hill by himself. You should go ahead and ask his teachers though, just to hear their account - it'll be most illuminating.

Ablondiebutagoody · 29/04/2025 09:34

This all sounds a bit melodramatic. I'm guessing that it was a very small hill, no "climbing" involved and that the teacher could see him. If there are big sticks around it's not going to be some mountain hike.
