To ask the best way to whiten my teeth?

SheldonandAmyFarahFowler · 28/04/2025 18:15

Brown teeth from drinking too much Coke ☹️
Do whitening toothpastes work or what else could I try?
Thanks

Dentist is the best way. They have the appropriate level of legal bleaching without damaging your teeth. Toothpastes don’t really work and neither do the whitening strips. I noticed it seemed to make certain bits look whiter but not consistently over the whole tooth, the trays and gel are best.

littlemissprosseco · 28/04/2025 18:22

Definitely go to the dentist

MatildaTheCat · 28/04/2025 18:23

Laser followed by the trays.

MatildaTheCat · 28/04/2025 18:24

Assuming you’ve already seen the hygienist for a thorough clean?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/04/2025 18:28

If dentist is out of your price range, you could try Eucryl powder if it's surface staining?

Dentist.

But also Crest whitening strips made a massive difference to my teeth.

They're not banned in the UK (myth) but they're not sold in the UK as come over the hydrogen peroxide limit for UK sales.

But you can buy them from Europe or the US and have then delivered to you as they're not banned in the UK.

But don't buy them off Ebay etc or UK sellers who will then send you some pointless teeth stripes and a tube of crest toothpaste for £££ to get round the law.

Thanks for the replies.
I didn’t think of the dentist for some reason.
Is it painful what the dentist does to whiten teeth?

Oil pulling

The coke may have eroded your enamel so the yellow dentine underneath is more visible.

Go see your dentist and get his advice before you try ant products as you could make it worse.

Yep, the enamel is nearly all gone ☹️

Won't whiten teeth that are stained.

Not a myth they have over 0.1% hydrogen peroxide so are illegal in both UK and Europe as well as Australia and NZ. Anyone supplying them to these places is knowingly breaking the law and not obtaining them from proctor and gamble who will not supply to exporters to these countries.

Shoppers warned of dangers of using illegal teeth whitening kits

Which? has discovered a number of illegal at-home teeth whitening kits being sold to unsuspecting consumers that could damage or burn gums if used incorrectly.

I've ordered Crest whitening strips from Amazon.com (you go on the American site). They cost around £40 and then £7 shipping from what I remember.

Worked really well, no issues.

I've been to a dentist for whitening and they bleached my gums and caused all sorts of sensitivity. I prefer the strips now, and do a couple a month which keeps any sensitivity at bay.

Try and stop the coke though OP. It's not worth losing your teeth over a fizzy drink.

I switched from coke to sparkling water and it really helped the transition. It gave me the fizz I was craving but it is less bad for enamel. (Now I do a good mix of normal water and sparkling water).

The reason it is illegal for sellers to sell crest strips in the UK is that hydrogen peroxide in these concentrations is potentially dangerous for many reasons.

The OP has said they think the enamel has been eroded through drinking coke , so not only would whitening strips be very sensitive to use they would make the damage and discolouration worse . This is precisely why anything over 0.1 % hydrogen peroxide was made illegal by the EU and hence UK in the first place.

OP , from what they say, does not need teeth whitening, they need treatment to replace the eroded enamel.

Dentist is the first port of call as PP have said. However, they can be v expensive. personally I have found this good: Colgate Max White Ultimate Renewal Whitening Toothpaste 75ml. It's not cheap at £12 a tube, but you only need a pea size blob night and morning and I found it pretty effective. It won't give you a bright white smile, but I thought it was a positive improvement.

Goldengirl123 · 28/04/2025 20:37

Dentist will make moulds and give you a whitening agent. Believe me they work

Ribenaberry12 · 28/04/2025 20:39

Does anyone know where to buy gel syringes for the trays?

I had mine done years ago at the dentist and still have the trays but can’t find the gel online and the dentist has closed down. It looks to be laser now at dentists but if I’ve still got the trays and I’d kinda like to use them rather than starting again with a different method.

Turmerictolly · 28/04/2025 20:49

Try Enlighten via dentist. Around £500

You can buy syringes from your new dentist , but they need to see you first. It's illegal to be sold them from anywhere else.

Then NOTHING can whiten what's not there - enamel. No gel, strips or trays can do anything except make it worse.

I think your only option is to have veneers fitted by a dentist. Expensive but I really don't think there is anything else that can be done, sorry.

MumofSpud · 30/04/2025 08:13

I had exactly the same problem - I went to the dentist for a proper clean - took about 30 mins!
Made such a difference!
I couldn’t believe how much was built up between my teeth!
I then got the whitening mould / gel (£250?) and I now use whitening toothpaste and floss regularly.

Veneers are possibly not necessary , simple placement of composite (white filling) is much less destructive , however nothing will last long unless the fizzy drink habit is curtailed .

whitening, toothpastes etc will just make the problem worse.
