Aibu to find this comment from dh annoying?

Did my first marathon today (there that's the stealth boast part done.) I was happy with my time, a little slower than I'd hoped but god the hills and the wind!!!
Dh and DD were at the finish line and cheered and congratulated. Then as we were leaving the area dh said "wow you should have seen the first to finish, they were 2 hours something" ... he would have continued with his awe if I hadn't eaten him.
EVERY single race I do, he tell me within minutes of finishing how fast the winners were. I just can't see myself ever thinking that's something someone in my position would want to hear! Ever, really, but especially not minutes after finishing and wavering between elation and death!!!!!!!!
Aibu?

Wtaf is wrong with him ? Yanbu to be furious and think that’s the worst thing to say to someone who has completed a race.

Congratulations on your achievement 👏 I’m not sporty at all but if I could run a marathon I’d have it on my cv and tombstone.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/04/2025 19:52

Charcoal biscuits.

That's what you need, for your wind.

That's what I take, and I'm just sat on the sofa watching the telly.

Opinionsprettyplease · 27/04/2025 19:52

@Snorlaxo thank you! I really wonder about him, he genuinely thought it'd be a cool topic of conversation, like a freak weather event or something!

CONGRATULATIONS! 🙌🏻

Say something to him - I’m sure he doesn’t mean to upset you but it’s thoughtless and insensitive.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 27/04/2025 19:55

Bloody well.done, OP Flowers

Your DH is a fool.

Opinionsprettyplease · 27/04/2025 19:56

@LovelySG thank you very much, I'm delighted.
Well I did eat him but had to get over it then as it would have been shit for DD all the way home otherwise.

@BatshitCrazyWoman thank you! Don't know if it'll help my case if I tell him you said so though, given your username 😅

Oh congratulations! I'm training for my second half, I don't think I've got a full marathon in me, so you are heroic!

I think your DH might be a case for the 'Paddington Hard Stare' next time he tries the 'Oooh the winner got such and such a time!' You could follow it up with 'Really, how fascinating' in as dead a tone as you can manage and then 'I'm delighted with MY time.'

He might get the hint. If not, perhaps your next training session could involve building a patio? I'll hold the shovel...

vdbfamily · 27/04/2025 20:02

Unless you are an elite athlete who was expecting to come in top ten, I think it is reasonable for him to be proud of your achievement AND fill of admiration for someone who can run a marathon so fast.

BearyNiceEars · 27/04/2025 20:13

I have done a few halves over the years, this wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. My times are at least twice as slow as the fastest so I dont see myself in the same sphere.

Having said that, I haven’t done a full marathon and can understand it seems a little insensitive after you have just slogged your guts out for hours doing something only a fraction of people can! Huge congratulations on your achievement, it really is incredible and I am in awe 👏

Fair enough and I think this is where he is coming from. But if it was me, I'd feel the feeling and bite my tongue!

I don't think any marathon time is an achievement unless you've done it dressed as a rhino.

Praying4Peace · 27/04/2025 20:17

Well done OP, fantastic achievement!

Mrsttcno1 · 27/04/2025 20:20

Ah see this is a different people feel differently thing. I’m also a runner and I am always intrigued to hear what time the elite got when I finish my marathon/half/10k. I’m certainly not in competition with them, I know that and so does my husband, but I love to hear what they did get and who won. I can be proud of myself and also be proud of the best of the best who get the winning times. If anything doing it myself makes me all the more appreciative of how incredible these athletes are.

Iwilladmit · 27/04/2025 20:23

Congrats OP. I think you’re incredible.

Gymmum82 · 27/04/2025 20:24

I compete in events similar (not running races) and I’m always in awe of the winners and check their times. Even watch their events. Why are you jealous of elite athletes? Their achievements don’t diminish yours. I bet it was amazing to see the winners cross the finish line and see their speed. That takes nothing away from what you have achieved as a low level runner and mother with a job a home and a family

faerietales · 27/04/2025 20:25

Well done!

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what your DH said though. My dad used to run marathons and was always full of admiration for the elites.

MouseMama · 27/04/2025 20:26

I think I’d go against the grain on this and say I don’t think his comment is unreasonable except in the context where you’ve told him before you don’t like it and want to bask in your own achievement. For a normal person finishing a marathon is a huge achievement - in virtually any time. Quite separate to that it’s incredible the way the professionals can basically sprint the whole race at a pace many of us could only dream of even over a short distance! In terms of making conversation, this is an aspect of the race your husband would know you would have missed (seeing the professionals finish) and so it makes sense that he would want to share it with you. I don’t think their accomplishment in any way diminishes yours.

anyway congratulations!

MysweetAudrina · 27/04/2025 20:29

I do a parkrun every Saturday and got a pb this week but still check to see who got the fastest and talk about it with my ds who finishes over 6 minutes faster than me. No one else can take the shine off my achievement.

NinaGeiger · 27/04/2025 20:29

Is this the only area where he does something like this or are there any other areas where he subtly takes the shine off your achievements?

I agree with this, presumably you weren't thinking you were going to finish first.

Itsjustgonenoonhalfpastmonsoon · 27/04/2025 20:39

Well done on finishing your marathon 👍. I’d have trouble running 2.6 miles, never mind 26. When you have had a good rest, let your husband know calmly that he’s diminishing your achievement by focusing on the athletes’ times.
