Thailand in July… am I insane to even consider it?

Just that, really! I’ve got some unexpected annual leave available that I must take in July.. and Thailand is a place that:

1- I’ve never been to before
2- has always been on the bucket list!
3- is coming in super cheap currently…

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Thailand at this time of year so was really hoping to hear from somebody that may have been in July. Especially Phuket and Bangkok.

I’ve heard the weather can be pretty rubbish at times, but how rubbish are we really talking? Are we talking complete washout pretty much 24/7 or short, sharp rainfall? If it’s only short we can cope!

I would consider somewhere else like Bali, but we’ve already been and would like to try to go somewhere new.

I am also open to other location ideas, but it must be somewhere accepting of a Turkish passport without the need for a visa. I don’t have much time to get that sorted.

Thank you!

I wouldn’t risk no

I wouldn’t risk no

Thank you for being honest, I am really on the fence about it. I don’t want to invest two weeks into somewhere that we may not be able to go out and about / enjoy.

I have been to Thailand a few times, always in the school Summer holidays. We went to Phuket two years ago in July and yes, it does rain but very infrequently and only for a short while. Go! You won’t regret it!

Puppylucky · 27/04/2025 17:54

We went to Bangkok in July and whilst it didn't rain continually, when it did it was epic!

SwissPea · 27/04/2025 17:55

Last year we went to Koh Samui and Koh Tao which are on the other side to Phuket where it rains less.

MyUmberSeal · 27/04/2025 17:56

Went to Bangkok 2 years ago for my birthday , July into August. It rained, but it wasn’t constant, had an incredible time. Do it!

Don’t

when so many other lovely places to go where you won’t be anxious about the weather

pinkysmamma · 27/04/2025 17:58

Thank you all! We did Bali in September a few years back and it was amazing, beautiful weather - we did have a few rain / thunderstorms and when we did they were incredible to watch.. but really was hoping to be able to try somewhere new this time. Thailand is coming in at such a good cost I’m thinking perhaps we risk it…!

A rain storm in Thailand is awesome. It also doesn’t rain all the time. To me it didn’t matter. Would go.

Whereas for me, definitely would matter!

Motherofacertainage · 27/04/2025 18:28

Are you going to lie on a beach? ( in which case there are safer bets weather wise in July but I still wouldn't rule it out as we have had great weather in Koh Samui in July and August.) But if you ask want to travel around and see all the amazing sights I would totally recommend. is really easy and cheap to get about - sleeper train up from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is fab - fairly basic but amazing experience . Internal flights v cheap too. It will be humid and sticky in Bangkok but there is so much to experience and so long as you have a room with air con it's totally doable. Go for it 100%

Appalonia · 27/04/2025 18:29

I'm actually in Bangkok right now! I went to Koh Samui/ Koh Phangan in July some years ago. It was hot, humid and when it rained it was a short downpour in the afternoon or sometimes at night. It didn't affect my enjoyment of my holiday at all. So I'd say go! It's so beautiful and the pp are so lovely and it's so cheap! The jetlag, on the other hand...

Girlintheframe · 27/04/2025 18:33

We went the end of June and it did rain very hard but only for up to an hour and even then not every day. Tended to rain very early in the morning. Honestly it had no impact on our holiday at all and was super cheap. We don’t like beaches though so depends what your plans are I would say.

Mondayblues2 · 27/04/2025 18:33

I went in June, it rained 50% of the time

pinkysmamma · 27/04/2025 18:50

Thanks everyone much appreciated. I’m starting to lean more towards the idea of just going and embracing it.

we already live in a hot and humid country so rain might actually be a welcome break

We spent 3 weeks on Koh Lanta in July.
Yes, there was the odd very heavy shower, but that is part of the fun. We were still able to do all planned trips without being impacted at all.
The only time there was a longer period of rain one morning, I happened to be in the spa, so I just stayed put and had another treatment!

flossymuldoon · 28/04/2025 06:16

Do it. We had our honeymoon, 1st and 6th anniversaries there and we’ve been 6 summer holidays in a rows . All in July/Aug. It rains every now and then but not for long. The sun is so bloody hot there that the occasional cloudy days is a massive bonus as it’s a nice break from the sun.
its our favourite place in the whole world.

Shootingstar11 · 28/04/2025 06:35

Go! We went in July/August and while it did rain a couple of times it was quick heavy storms then hot and sunny again. We booked a sunset meal at a cliffside restaurant and didn’t see the sunset but the most incredible thunderstorm! We went to Bangkok (where it didn’t rain) and Koh Samui.

olympicsrock · 28/04/2025 06:39

I’ve been in July - loved it. The rainstorms are quite fun to watch and don’t last that long .

Gave me a chance to stay somewhere amazing out of peak season.
Do it !
We went to Hua Hin which was fab!

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 28/04/2025 06:45

Went to Samui in July, yes it rained but it also cleared up very quickly. At times we even stayed in the pool. You can also see the rain coming in.

We had more, hot dry days than rain.

mjf981 · 28/04/2025 07:23

September/October are the wettest months.
You'll get some rain in July, but likely also some nice days.

Springhassprungxx · 28/04/2025 07:27

I wouldn't let the chance of rain stop me going somewhere on the bucket list!! Always go to places out of seaaon, you get so much more for your money. You only regret the things you didn't do op!
