AIBU not to tip my hairdresser after expensive cut?

I get my hair done every 8-12 weeks, cut and colour each time and I pay just under £200 for the pleasure each time (London prices). They have now got a card machine which asks if you also want to tip your dresser and she can clearly see if I tip or not as she is always the one taking my payment. This week I did tip 10% just to not feel uncomfortable, but I feel forced into it somehow and it feels really cheeky. I do like my hair dresser and I know it’s the salon and not her idea with the tipping.

YABU - Yes you should always tip

YANBU - It’s expensive as it is. Don’t feel bad about not tipping.

It's no different to paying in cash and not tipping she can see that too.
I don't think how much you pay for your hair is relevant tbh.
If you don't want to tip then don't tip

Hmm undecided on this one. It is a very expensive cut so I wouldn't tip in that scenario. But the £200 will also be her rent for the chair, her supplies etc, so maybe she needs the tips more than we think?
I tip my hairdressers purely because I get a dry cut, no fluff or faff, just spray with water and trim, back in a ponytail. So I always give her a couple £ to make up for such a low priced job. For £200 I would not tip. Then again I wouldn't pay £200 for a haircut. Mine is £12 😅

Surely you've seen the 'tip' option before in restaurants and bars?

Just cancel that bit and tap your card.

So many people do this so I'm sure she won't think anything of it.

But if I'm going to tip someone, I bring a bit of cash in advance so I know it actually goes to them.

Hairdressers fall into the ‘sometimes’ category for tipping for me. I always tip restaurants/servers. Sometimes tip hairdressers, beauty shops, taxis. I don’t think she’ll be that bothered. If she’s a longstanding hairdresser and uiuvr a good relationship just explain it to her; say you’d love to keep coming as a regular but can’t afford the extra £20 every time. I think she’d rather have a big spending regular on her books 😊

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 27/04/2025 14:45

My hairdresser is a sole trader so can set his own prices so I don't feel the need to tip. I also pay £200 ISH . It might be different if he had a low paid trainee washing hair etc.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 27/04/2025 14:48

I can’t afford to tip although I only pay 45 for a cut and colour. She won’t accept a tip because my hair is a short pixie and uses very little dye and quick to cut
i go every month
i I wouldn’t tip in your position.
just decline the option when it appears on the card reader.

I usually tip in restaurants unless really awful, but they are not responsible for my hair and you usually don’t have a “relationship” with your waitress like you do with a hair dresser. I think it’s a bit cheeky to ask for it considering the price I pay. If I wanted to pay extra I could proactively do that.

I never tip the hairdresser as they already charge a fortune!

fiveIsNewOne · 27/04/2025 15:23

Seems her new system comes with a nice new feature allowing her to ask for a tip without having to actually ask, just in case some people would feel willing/bullied to give it.

Don't give it too much headspace, just cancel it.

If they're renting the chair then they should be setting their own prices.
If they're employed by the salon I'd be more inclined to tip.

LadyWiddiothethird · 27/04/2025 15:24

Never tip my hairdresser, way to expensive to be doing that!

Backbag · 27/04/2025 15:24

I don't tip at the hairdresser. I pay nearly 70 for a cut and blow dry that takes about 30 mins. If he hairdresser isn't making a decent living from that I'm in the wrong job.

There is another thread very similar I'll link- its already 4 pages long. I'm sure this gets asked weekly!

Tipping 10% for a haircut. | Mumsnet

goldenretrieverenergy · 27/04/2025 15:27

I always tip my hairdresser, but it seems I am in the minority. I don’t think the price is relevant, if you don’t want to tip, then you don’t have to.

DoItLikeAWoman · 27/04/2025 22:25

I tip a fixed amount 5-10 rather than%
