Job application

I recently applied for a position at a relatively small company with multiple branches across the country. After submitting my CV and covering letter, they responded promptly, arranging an online interview via Teams with a recruitment representative that seemed promising.

Following this initial online interview with a few hours notice, I was invited to meet the owner and manager in person the very next day. This required me to travel more than two hours from Yorkshire to Oxford. The meeting appeared to go well, resulting in an invitation to complete a trial shift to demonstrate my customer service abilities.

I then participated in a five-hour trial at my local branch, shadowing an employee who was very supportive, though she wasn't in a position to make hiring decisions. The day after completing this trial, I sent a thank-you message expressing my appreciation for the opportunity.

It has now been four days since my trial shift, and I've received no communication about my application status. This uncertainty is frustrating, especially considering the significant time and effort I've invested in the process, including substantial travel. I believe I deserve feedback or at least an update on my status.

The current job market seems to heavily favor employers, making the situation even more challenging for job seekers like myself.

I'm wondering if I should proactively contact the company about my application status, and if so, how long I should wait before reaching out? Am I being unreasonable in expecting a response after investing so much time in their process? Does common courtesy from employers still exist in today's job market? I should mention that I'm fortunate to be currently employed and don't take that for granted, but this experience has left me questioning professional etiquette in recruitment.

Due to the current timings (a bank holiday week) I suspect the decision maker is on annual leave. I would leave it until late Monday/Tuesday before contacting them. I’m in the public sector and things move very slowly.

What type of job is it? A high paying/senior type? It seems a long way to go if not…

All seems positive though, so just hold on a bit longer.

I should add that the pay is quite modest, not much above minimum wage and not full time.
