Neighbours building work 630-9pm?!

My neighbours have recently started building work. I was under the impression that there are laws in place which prohibit noisy work during certain hours. I.e only allowed between 8am and 6pm on a weekday, and only until 1pm on a Saturday, and none at all permitted on Sundays.

So far, their builders have begun work at 630am on some weekdays, and we often hear banging etc way past 8pm/9pm at night. We assume the work being done very late at night is the family themselves. We live in a semi-detached, so it’s waking us up/stopping us going to sleep etc.
Every day and night.

I don’t want to mention it to our neighbours, as very worried about falling out with them. And really want to avoid reporting them to the council or anything like that.

Can anyone advise if we have any legal grounds or do we just have to put up with it? Or something in the middle?
As I said, I thought the general rule was no building work before 8am and none after 6pm.
As well as nothing past 1pm on a Saturday and nothing at all on Sunday.
Are the rules different in Cambridgeshire?

Thanks!

Where I live quiet hours are 11pm - 7/8am so building work to by 11pm and nothing super noisy before 7. Otherwise no one working a standard job could ever do any DIY.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 26/04/2025 15:43

There is a big difference between commercial builders working noise hours which are roughly as you state varies according to area. But no similar rules for DIY as to be honest most people only have evenings and weekends to work. So DIY till 9pm and weekends would be fine but it's not fine for a construction company

“before 8am and none after 6pm.
As well as nothing past 1pm on a Saturday and nothing at all on Sunday”. Never heard of this and can’t imagine it’s right as nobody would ever be able to do any DIY if they had a job? I thought 11pm was the general cut off for noise, if you’re in the UK. Check with the local council to see what the rules are in your area?

You are right about the rules. Unfortunately it is not easy to get them enforced, which is why it is usually to see builders working on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

You either need to speak to your neighbours or wear ear defenders and put up with it and hope it doesn't last too long or take the process to the council.

Or move.

Maddy70 · 26/04/2025 16:01

It's no noise after 11.

proximalhumerous · 26/04/2025 16:03

Sympathies - that sounds horrific. How completely inconsiderate to start DIY at 6.30am.

tealandteal · 26/04/2025 16:04

I don’t believe there are set rules around building or DIY noise. My local council says:

We recommend that noisier activities are restricted to the following hours:
Weekdays: 8am to 9pm
Saturday: 8am to 7pm
Sunday: 10am to 5pm
This is for guidance only and each case must be considered on a case specific basis and on its individual merits.

So quite clear they cannot enforce this.

Redpeach · 26/04/2025 16:05

Noisy Work hours are only allowed 8 till 5pm round these parts

Tooearlytothink · 26/04/2025 16:07

The rules you refer to, where we are anyway, are a condition of the planning application so only apply to work which requires planning and a building warrant. Outside if that it would just be the usual ‘asbo’ hours of up to 11pm (until 7 or 8am)

DiscoBeat · 26/04/2025 16:07

I wouldnt be happy starting so early but 9pm is ok, it gets the job done sooner. Perhaps have a word with them and ask to start at 8am - 9am at the weekend.

toomuchfaff · 26/04/2025 17:11

the law you are thinking of is noise after 11pm.

Not 6pm.

so it’s waking us up/stopping us going to sleep etc. Every day and night.

You're really wanting to go to bed at 8pm every night? Bit exaggerated?
Suck it up, it'll be done soon hopefully

The rules relevant to your area will depend on your council - ours is noisy building works (not DIY ) is allowed 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 1pm Saturdays and nothing on Sundays and bank holidays. But friends ours living in a different area looked this up and their council don't publish any restrictions.
