Any better resorts for our budget in Maldives than Lux South Ari Atoll

Travelenthusiast · 26/04/2025 09:44

Apologies posting in AIBU for more traffic.

We are looking to book a holiday to Maldives in rainy season - Sept or Oct- for me, DH and our DS (age 4). The trip length would be 10 - 14 days and the budget £10-£15k depending on length of holiday. Would like to be more like £12k if possible.

We have been to Maldives once before (4 year old was 1 year old) and are sure on our destination despite distance, time of year etc. We loved it! But we aren’t frequent Maldives travellers due to cost as it’s very much a luxury / special occasion holiday for us.

Would any wise mumsnetters be able to share their knowledge on Lux South Ari Atoll and their experience? And if you know of ‘better’ resorts can you share and why they are better?

What are your priorities for your holiday? And where did you stay last time? We've been four times, not to Lux South Ari Atoll, and our top priority is an accessible house reef. Lux SAA doesn't have this so it's never featured in our list of possible resorts.

I would highly recommend sending an email to Purely Maldives, with your budget and any requirements. You could tell them you're considering Lux SAA and ask if they have anything better for your budget. If you're still keen on Lux SAA they might also be able to beat whatever quote you currently have:

They're an independent travel agent who only offer Maldives holidays so they have access to far more resorts than the usual suspects. Our last two trips have been booked with them and they're brilliant, I wouldn't use any other travel agent now. They have all the usual travel agent protections and you can use a credit card to book if you like to have added protection.

Thank you @JustLikeThatBluebird - this is so helpful - we hadn’t heard of Purely Maldives. Have you found significant savings with them?

It’s a silly question, but does a house reef basically mean there’s better quality/ more exciting fish to see in sea just off the beach?

We stayed at Lux last time and loved it, but as it’s our only experience I always wonder if we just think it’s fab as it is our only experience of the beauty of the Maldives!

We stayed at Oblu Sangeli in a two bed family villa with own pool. I would highly recommend.

It comes with free life jackets in the room, two bathrooms, individual aircon, small lounge with TV, mini bar with snacks that is restocked daily.

We had two free a la carte meals and two free spa treatments plus free boat trips, free snorkeling and free paddle boarding etc.

We had a fantastic deal with Helen Knowles who is a Travel Counselor. (She has a Facebook page/website). Whole trip from Manchester in 2022 was £14k for 11 nts.

Oblu have a few cheaper or more 'nature' resorts if the prices have gone up. I wouldn't hesitate in going back or trying another of their resorts.

@Travelenthusiast A house reef is a coral reef that encircles the island. I think Lux SAA does have one but you have to go out to it on a boat. A lot of islands you can just swim a few metres (or even walk through the water when tide is low, if access is suitable). And yes, it's incredible being able to swim and get to the reef drop-off where you tend to see things like moray eels, octopus, massive shoals of fish and the bigger sharks (all harmless!).

We've found Purely Maldives to be a saving of maybe around £1,000 though it can be hard to compare if you choose a resort that isn't offered by the big companies. So it's not mega bucks savings but it's significant.

The service is great with PM and their access to loads more resorts is brilliant. Last year, we'd chosen a particular resort we quite fancied but it was coming in at £15k. Their agent did some research and sent us a load of options at the same spec and with the same requirements. We ended up choosing Oblu Helengeli for £10k. This was for two of us staying for 10 nights, all inclusive, in an overwater villa with a private pool and flying business class. This was in September/October too, so the same time of year you're planning on going.

The other benefit is that you have free choice of airline rather than being stuck with whichever airline(s) is associated with the travel agent. We really wanted to fly business but can't afford Emirates prices. By booking with Purely Maldives we were able to choose to fly with GulfAir, and the flights were just over £4k as opposed to around £12k for the equivalent flights with Emirates. If you do get a quote with them, just be aware that they will give you the flight costs separately to the resort cost. The first time we had a quote I was suspicious as to why it was so cheap, then realised I needed to add the two quotes together. It was still a good deal but no longer eyebrow raisingly cheap.

I probably wouldn't recommend Helengeli with a young child as the lagoon wasn't particularly good. The coral comes very close to the shore so there isn't really that big shallow lagoon with soft sand that's so much fun for children to play in. The reef is amazing and it's a lovely resort but I think it's better for adults. You could check out the other Oblu resorts though.

You might want to look at Vilamendhoo. Also on South Ari Atoll, so you could do a whale shark trip if that interests you, and has an amazing house reef just metres from the shore. We found that you could walk to it in low tide in some of the channels.

We've also been to Safari Island, which was lovely but the house reef is not quite as accessible and it's definitely less luxury than Lux. The best house reef is probably at Embudu but that's a budget resort and probably not what you're after if you're looking at Lux. Incredible reef but I probably wouldn't choose to go back as I do like a bit more luxury!

Sorry, that got a bit long... I just love the Maldives and we're currently planning our next holiday there.

Thank you @BlueMum16 and @JustLikeThatBluebird - really appreciate the expertise. Oblu Helengeli and Oblu Sangeli both sound fab, as do prices you paid. I hadn’t thought we could get either a two bedroom villa or business class flights within our price range. So thats great to hear!

Going to do some googling - I really like the idea of a house reef too.

Vilamendhoo is ok without children, amazing house reef but there is nothing for children just a small playground.
I liked Kuramathi, fantastic house reef, kids club and activities for children. I don’t think it’s as luxurious as Lux tbh. They have beautiful villas.

I have heard Lily Beach is comparable to Lux but haven’t been myself. Sadly out of my price range.
also heard good things about Sun Siyam world, don’t know if they have a house reef.

SchoolDilemma17 · 26/04/2025 11:20

For me personally a house reef is a must btw, we go snorkelling every day and it’s a huge part of the Maldives experience. Your DS will be able to see some corals and turtles etc too, get him a full face snorkel mask and a life jacket.

Totallytoti · 26/04/2025 11:34

We have been twice to the Lux Maldives- 10 years apart in fact. I found it to be quite dated on comparison. The spa was just average tbh. Kids club was ok and not a good range. I think there are far better ones tbh.

JustLikeThatBluebird · 26/04/2025 11:57

@Travelenthusiast While you google I would definitely email Purely Maldives with your budget and requirements and see what they come back with. You can say you want a house reef, two bed villa, facilities for children etc etc. You might even get a private pool in that price range. They'll round up all the possibilities and send you some quotes. We even tell them things like 'must be barefoot dining with a buffet restaurant', as we don't like being tied to formal meals the whole holiday (though an option for occasional a la carte is nice!).

This is great to hear. We’re going to this resort in January!

Have a look at Siyam World - bit of a bigger resort , more to do , very child friendly . Was very impressed with the standard and service .

Snapncrackle · 28/04/2025 17:29

Several years ago DH & I did
2 weeks in Thailand and two weeks @ Merru island in a water villa

we payed around 10k for the whole holiday 😂 and that was with Kuion ( think that’s how it’s spelt )
same holiday now would probably be double

@Travelenthusiast I suggest you pose your question on the Tripadvisor Maldives forum for some expert advice. If you go on the desktop rather than the mobile site of that forum there is a list of "stickies" on the right hand side, the second of which has a list of questions which will enable people on that forum to give you the most benefit of their expertise. They will need to know your approximate budget excluding international flights so perhaps worth a search on Skyscanner first to identify what your flights might cost and then deducting that from your budget. With a 4YO I recommend flying direct with BA to avoid having to switch planes in the Middle East (usually in the middle of the night) and also going Premium Economy (it is a long way in a cramped economy seat!). Business class flights will usually absorb a lot more of your budget and I would rather maximise the amount available to spend on a better resort...

My stays in the Maldives have not been to any mentioned, but the Ozen reserve bolifushi sounds amazing.

My advice would be to consider travelling independently. I got around a 20% saving by phoning the resort for their best deal, to include transport from Male, and booking flights separately.
