Baby boys clothes - Is this a thing?

This is super silly but it’s made me very curious

Moved recently I’ve been going to toddler groups here and there seems to be a tradition almost that boys wear baby blue nice bits ( think sort of mintini and the stuff you get out of baby boutiques) until they’re about one and then they go into navy tracksuits.

That’s not strange in itself but the way people talk about it (to me at least) - ‘oh when are you going to start putting him in navy?’ ‘i know he’s too old for baby blues now but I’m just not ready for him to not be a baby anymore’ ‘my husband is moaning because I’m not putting him in tracksuits yet’ all being recent examples I’ve heard.

Obviously I know blue for boys is a norm (although not my thing personally) but I’ve never come across the idea that they should be in certain shades at certain ages or certain styles (at least not so rigidly)
Is this a normal thing I’ve missed or is just here?

I meant to say it feels like the modern version of boys going it to long trousers at a certain age 😂

I’ve never heard of this at all. I do see a lot of babies in tracksuits and it’s not my favourite look but the whole colour/shade/age thing sounds mental.

CurbsideProphet · 26/04/2025 09:42

I'm trying to work out where you live as this is not something that I have heard.

Cloudyvibes · 26/04/2025 09:42

Never heard of this and am a boy mum. Mine was in various colours, red/beige/khaki etc with different shades of blue thrown in.
I wasn’t keen on tracksuits and don’t think they got a full tracksuit until they were pre teens! Now they live in them😂

Icepop79 · 26/04/2025 09:43

Have absolutely never heard of this!

pimplebum · 26/04/2025 09:43

Never heard this
never discussed this with anybody
cant say I’ve seen this
nursery opposite and the trend seems to be neutrals and shops are quite neutral

TheNightingalesStarling · 26/04/2025 09:44

Joggers are a practical choice for a toddler of either sex, navy particularly so, but I have never heard or seen this.

MidoriNoRingo · 26/04/2025 09:47

I’ve never heard of this and I have a boy.

Cryingatthegym · 26/04/2025 09:49

I have two boys and have never heard of this. Where do you live?

cressidahun · 26/04/2025 09:50

Never heard of this and I’ve always avoiding putting my DS in a tracksuit

Jollyjoy · 26/04/2025 09:52

Wow that is batshit, although I can think of some of the school mums I know whom I imagine would think like this, as they do the whole baby blue from boutiques type stuff. I think since you don’t think like this you’d benefit from trying out some new places as you need some new mum pals.

SpaceChocolatel · 26/04/2025 09:53

I have 2 boys and this is not a thing where I live. Agree that in the shops these are probably common colours for boys, and there is less baby blue as they get older but most small boys where I live seem to wear a range of colours and clothes. No one has ever commented that they should be wearing one colour or the other, or a tracksuit in particular.

Gettingbysomehow · 26/04/2025 09:53

Is this the UK? When DS was little he wore baby grows mostly in various colours. Then went into nice stretchy blue dungarees that mothercare used to sell. I usually had him in comfortable stretchy clothing so he could move freely. Babies in jeans and adult style clothing always looks so uncomfortable.

GroovyChick87 · 26/04/2025 09:53

Ive never heard of this and two of my kids are boys. I've seen baby blue coloured stuff in baby boutiques but I don't know anyone that wears them regularly. I've never bought that type of clothing for my kids as babies because they are usually expensive and not very practical.

JoyousEagle · 26/04/2025 09:55

How ridiculous

B1anche · 26/04/2025 09:56

I've never heard of this. My son (now 7) has lived in joggers since he was a toddler. Usually navy, dark grey, black. Colour choice is purely to hide the dirt.

MoistVonL · 26/04/2025 09:58

2 sons and I’ve never heard this.

Crochetcamel · 26/04/2025 09:59

Glad I’ve not just been living under a rock!
It’s not for me. I like comfy and colourful for all my kids.

Should say not everyone does it’s but it’s at least half are more and even the ones that don’t treat it like a normal way to think.
Pretty much everyone I’ve met at the toddler groups have been lovely though, even the ones with strange ideas!

I have a 17 month old boy and go to toddler groups and and went to baby classes on mat leave. I’ve never seen this, have no idea what baby blue boutique clothes are and have never heard of mintini. People round here (south east affluent area) dress their boys in clothes of all colours and age doesn’t come into it. I actually don’t see toddlers in tracksuits that often, it’s usually dungarees or leggings/trousers and a nice t shirt with jumper if it’s colder.

HippeePrincess · 26/04/2025 10:01

I’ve never even heard of mintini, or come across a baby boutique. Most the baby and toddler groups I’ve been to if they are in the morning young babies are in sleepsuits/babygrows. Most popular are supermarket or next outfits. Lots of toddlers are in joggers here as they’re practical for babygroup but any colour and rarely a full tracksuit.

Gemmawemma9 · 26/04/2025 10:03

Not the norm at all. Never heard of this weird rule in my life.

Eenameenadeeka · 26/04/2025 10:04

Definitely not something I've heard of although I do tend towards darker colored Clothes for my boys (not just navy) once they're (messy) toddlers because they don't stain haha

OneKookyPinkShaker · 26/04/2025 10:08

I have never heard of this and I have a soon to be one year old boy! He is in all kinds of colours and outfits. He wears joggers sometimes as they are quite practical for crawling around nursery and toddler group but they aren't exclusively navy

WickWood · 26/04/2025 10:08

I have a baby boy and haven't heard of this personally. I dress him in what I want and that's all colours, I will continue to do so when he's a toddler also. I don't personally like tracksuits and much prefer dungarees, tee-shirt and shorts/pants, a skatery style. Obviously he can wear what he wants when he's old enough to decide!

BunnyLake · 26/04/2025 10:13

Mother of two boys (ok they aren’t children) but I’ve never come across this, must be a new thing. Are the mums very young (teens/early 20s?).
