Very drunk friend - wake up or not?

CalicoPusscat · 26/04/2025 02:14

I managed to get him home OK earlier and he certainly wouldn't be up to anything like pissing in the wardrobe.

I was wondering if I should wake him up for more water or a cup of tea? It's a friend, nothing romantic. I think he overdid it on an empty stomach. I'm wide awake now!

Leave them if they're breathing!

Leave them if they're breathing!

He's definitely doing that as I can hear the occasional snore from his bedroom!

Ok I'll leave it for now.

If they are too drunk to answer a simple question coherently it can be dangerous to leave them. Do you intend to stay for a few hours?

If you do have you got a bucket or similar and water? Can you get him in the recovery position?

Riversof0tter5 · 26/04/2025 02:23

Move him onto his side to minimise risk of his choking on vomit in his sleep. Check YouTube or similar for how to do this.

Lucozade or Gatorade helps more than water or coffee 🙂

CalicoPusscat · 26/04/2025 02:31

Oh gosh no lucozade in or fizzy vitamins. My options are limited. There's lemon squash however.

We both had a few drinks yesterday (I wasn't with him) but I ate properly and he didn't. Might have a quick check as he wakes up and goes back to sleep very quickly.

Theres always a first time!

Anotherparkingthread · 26/04/2025 02:35

He's just drunk. He's a grown man.You don't need to do anything except let him sleep.

thismummyslife · 26/04/2025 02:38

Put him in the recovery position and monitor him x

CalicoPusscat · 26/04/2025 02:39

MarkingBad · 26/04/2025 02:35

Theres always a first time!

Please don't say that 😆

Ok I'm waking him up for a quick check. Then I'm going to watch The Constant Gardener until I fall asleep.

Recovery position is super important. You wouldn't see the vomit. It would come up like reflux and block the windpipe. It happens during sleep.

You can use rehydration salts or make your own rehydration liquid with salt, sugar and water. Or just offer squash. https://www.slurrp.com/recipes/salt-and-sugar-drink-for-diarrhoea-oral-rehydration-solution-42382-1619093982
A lot of the feeling of hangover comes from electrolyte imbalance.

I've seen him have a seizure before so I understandably get concerned

This is how a cousin of mine died...

I absolutely knew somebody with an anecdote would come along.

The chances of dying from being very drunk are actually shockingly low. I am not counting accidents in this, like falling off roofs, crashing cars etc, rather just being drunk itself.

Most alcoholics live long enough to die of liver cirrhosis, which wouldn't be the case if they died from getting drunk. Most university students survive freshman year. Most people who go and get white boy wasted on a Saturday night live to tell the tale or it would be considered as dangerous as heroin.

He just needs to sleep now. In the morning he can drink electrolytes, eat a fried egg sandwich and he will be good as new.

Riversof0tter5 · 26/04/2025 02:49

Sorry for the dramatic anecdote. I didn't mean to derail and it didn't put me off drinking whatever I wanted in university years. It did make me more safety aware... You sound like a really good friend.

Riversof0tter5 · 26/04/2025 02:50

@Anotherparkingthread one person's anecdote is another person's bereavement. I don't appreciate your tone.

If it doesn't happen that often it's partly because more people have become aware of how to manage being drunk.

Well, that's an important piece of information - I unfortunately have no idea what you should do with a drunk person subject to seizures.

CalicoPusscat · 26/04/2025 02:58

Well I did wake him up and got lemon squash with a little sugar and salt.

Hopefully he'll be much better tomorrow if he's hydrated and has vitamin c

OP posts:
Riversof0tter5 · 26/04/2025 02:58

A lot depends on if he has seizures for other reasons and/or is on medication that might interact with alcohol, or whether he had a seizure from drinking. The first is a possible 111 call issue, the second a conversation a few days or weeks later about problem drinking.

I have seen the latter and it can be scary. (Not my cousin.)

Yay! I so would be having buttered toast if I were up like you are now.

Anotherparkingthread · 26/04/2025 03:05

Lol, well you can "not appreciate my tone" as much as you like.

The fact is most people who are drunk pass out in bed alone, sometimes on parks, in ditches, in their best mates bath tub. The odds of dying are still almost 0.

Fact is you're talking about a real dead person. You wouldn't say this face to face. You're dehumanised by keyboard warring and hiding behind a screen.

Sorry about your cousin. It's not nice to witness.

Friend is back to sleep now. I can watch the film until I drift off :)
