What to expect? Going to GP for lump?

Does anyone know what to expect if you go to the GP for a lump?

basically I have a new lump which started 4/5 weeks ago. It’s gotten bigger in that time and is at the edge of my left collarbone area (from looking at diagrams on google I think it’s around the supraclavicle area?) It’s not painful and is rock solid and doesn’t move

I made a thread already asking if it was worth going to the gp for it as it’s probably nothing and I don’t want to seem like a time waster and the advice was to book an appointment and get it checked so I’m going to do that

but just wondered if anyone knows what to expect at the appointment? I’ve never been to the gp before for a lump so have no clue what to expect or what will happen?

im not worried because im young and it’ll be nothing but the advice on my other thread was to get it checked so im going to follow that advice but yeah just wondered if anyone could advise on what will likely happen or what to expect?

figured it would be easier to make a new thread because this one is about what will likely happen whereas my other thread was should I go to the doctor in the first place

thank you!

I went through this recently. The GP will just prod it then refer you to a specialist. It's unlikely they'll be able to tell you what it is without a scan. As you say, hopefully it will be nothing, most are benign, (mine was benign). Good luck!

As mentioned above, the GP is likely to have a prod, check your medical history and likely that of your close relatives, then refer you on to dermatology or similar. It may be on the two week path way or not. Then, if it's considered necessary, you'll have a biopsy just to make sure it's nothing sinister and may be monitored.
Hope all goes well!

I went with a breast lump/lesion last summer just for reassurance. The Dr was concerned and gave me 7 days antibiotics but said to come in before surgery opened in 3 days as if the antibiotics hadn’t had any affect by then she wanted to get a referral in before the weekend. I went back on the Friday morning and she referred me. The hospital were on the phone by 11am booking me in for 9am the following Monday morning. I obviously assumed I was going to die imminently as the type of breast cancer I and the dr were concerned about is always stage 4 (I think). I was absolutely fine, and the hospital reassured me immediately but still got me back for a mammogram a week or two later just to be 100%.

Good luck and I hope your experience is as good as mine was.

I’ve had a couple of lumps (which were cysts). As PPs said, the GP visit is short - they will examine you (top off), take your history and likely refer you.

I was referred to a breast clinic on the 2 week cancer pathway. The clinic visit involved examination by a dr, ultrasound and then draining the cysts.

The worst part is the waiting/not knowing. Well done for getting it checked out and fingers crossed for a quick answer.

They'll feel it etc, no doubt refer you on the two week wait. You'll then meet a dr at the hospital and I'd assume ultra sound and biopsy, bloods, then a ct scan or mri. Good to get it checked out op, well done 😁
