To think this was rude and to be pissed off!

I have a hybrid job. Today is usually a wfh day but for a myriad of reasons I was on site today. I opted to sit at a colleagues desk (as she is an A/L) and as my desk was taken by my desk share counterpart. Anyway, I had a massage at 12:00 for a half hour, I went to that and on the way back I grabbed a sandwich to eat at my desk so I was gone for about 35-40 mins in total. Not unusual at all! When I got back another colleague (not in my dept) had unplugged my laptop and moved it to another desk as she claimed she wanted the desk with two screens and knew colleague was on A/L. There were plants of other desks available. She could have gone to another office to find a desk with two screens. AIBU to be pissed off! 😠 I mean who does that!

Meh. You weren't there. You weren't even in the building. It wasn't your desk anyway. It's a minor irritation at most.

Threecraws · 24/04/2025 15:53

I think it would really depend on the particular office set up and etiquette.

Hillrunning · 24/04/2025 15:55

Wouldn't be an issue in our office. I'd just sit on the next available desk.

Etiquette is if you see a laptop Hooked up then it’s taken…or so I thought

I think that's pretty rude. It was obvious you were working there that day and they had other options. It was lunchtime, so not as if you'd left it there from the day before.

SquigglePigs · 24/04/2025 15:58

Removing a computer that's already set up is outrageously rude! It would be completely unacceptable at my place of work. She had no business touching your things. If she wanted the desk that badly she should have asked nicely if you would swap with her, but she has no right to decide to remove someone else from the place they're working just because she feels like it.

It wouldn’t be an issue if you went to a meeting/lunch etc and came back to all of your stuff moved to another desk? Really? If she waited and then had asked me i would’ve moved no bother.

Thank you! That’s exactly my thinking! I wouldn’t dream of it!

Yes, we have a system and culture that means I wouldn't be surprised or upset. You don't seem to though so maybe next time pipe up and say 'Actually it has really thrown me to come back to this'

We arent allowed to go for lunch and leave our computer on the desk. It has to either go with you or into your locker.

Smallmercies · 24/04/2025 16:06

Why are you buggering off for massages in work hours? Perhaps you're known for doing very little work?

That’s not how we work, we don’t have lockers. It’s assigned desks. And hybrid workers share.

The massages are offered on site, by my workplace. It’s promoted on site as a part of our health awareness program. Lots of people have them…it’s not a big thing. We do them because we all work very hard! But thanks…

A lunch break is personal time, you can literally "bugger off" anywhere you like as long as you're only as long as you're meant to be.

I'm sure the op is entitled to a lunch break 🙄

BobbyBiscuits · 24/04/2025 16:12

It's highly inappropriate to unplug a colleagues laptop. It could result in all sorts of issues.
The workstation was clearly in use.

It sounds ridiculous really but could you print a sign saying 'desk in use- on break for x minutes'?

If it was a type of computer where you can log in as yourself while another person is still logged in, then it's not too bad for a colleague to hop on your desk when you're on lunch if they just needed to use the internal system or check something quickly.

But not just log you out/unplug your kit and use it as their workstation for the rest of the day.

Oh dear. Are you unfamiliar with the concept of a lunch break? They are quite common in professional settings......

Pancakeflipper · 24/04/2025 16:15

That would rude in our work place if a laptop is already plugged in and set up.

Fine to ask. But sounds like they waited until you weren't there.

Dangermoo · 24/04/2025 16:16

You are far from being unreasonable.

No they are our own assigned laptops. Not for anyone to log on to.
