I've called in sick

I haven't been well all week. A heavy cold, but I've been in and done my best. I was in meetings with my boss all day yesterday. She never once asked if I was OK or made the kind of "should you be here?" enquiries other did, and believe me it was obvious I wasn't well. A bit anti social to be there tbh, but you don't call sick with a cold if you're well enough to work...?

I got up and showered, dressed, got as far as putting my shoes on and finding my keys then as I was about to open the door, broke out in a horrible sweat and felt the need to sit down. So I decided sod this and came back to bed.

But if my boss had shown a bit more interest yesterday I might have pushed through...

I'm not going to fuss over anyone if they've turned up for work, and panda to them doing a 'are you sure you should be here' dance.

They're a working adult. If they've turned up they are well enough, and if they find they are not, they'll be letting me know they're going home.

Please don't expect your bosses to mother you.

NB: I'm actually a really caring boss, but you come across like a child.

Massive difference between working with a cough, sore throat, sniffing runny nose and having a full on head cold
Just say you've now got a fever as well so you're not coming in

Spreading a cold is selfish.

It may just be a cold to you but some people are living with others who are more vulnerable or immuno suppressed and for whom a cold can be serious.

If we all did this then the economy would grind to a halt. Fair enough for a heavy cold where you feel shivery with a pounding head, but absolutely not for a mild cold. Many people don't get paid either and cannot afford to be off work with a mild cold.

If you engage brain can you see how ridiculous that policy is?

As a nurse you surely know that a viral infection can be very serious to the elderly and infirm (the very people who are in hospital.) It doesn't just stop at a cold- some can become a chest infection and life threatening.

Many of the elderly people I knew caught Covid IN hospital FROM THE STAFF and some became very ill.

As a nurse it doesn't say much for your knowledge.

Edited

Wow!!! No need!!! Of course everyone knows how ridiculous that policy is in the NHS and it says nothing about someone’s clinical knowledge!! Feel free to come and work with us and fight it or change it 🤣

I don’t think you are being unreasonable at all to stay home if you are sick but if it’s because your boss didn’t ask how you were when it was obvious or if you are well to be there then I think you might be being a tad unreasonable. If you turn up for work you are saying that you are well enough to be there otherwise you would be at home surely.
Hope you feel better soon.

madaboutpurple · 24/04/2025 20:37

Ah sorry you are ill OP, my advice would be stay at home for the next few days until you feel well enough to feel that you are over it. I recently retired but when I was working I got many colds etc from people who thought they were well enough to go in or thought it was fine to go to work when they should have stayed off.

You’re a grown ass woman. I’m sure your boss has better things to do than worry about your cold and whether you’re going to be in or not. You wouldn’t be in on my watch though. My exec came in last year “unable to breathe” and gave me whooping cough, she was double vaccinated. Turned out I wasn’t vaccinated due to a scare in 1977. I’d say it was the sickest I’ve ever been but then I got sepsis and had an emergency op. Fun year. Colds are a pain but you’ll live.

I hope you wore a mask when you were in work with cold symptoms, we need to look out for colleagues and customers. Really it would be a good idea to do a covid test too. You were right to stay off today. Hope you feel better soon

There's a petition here if you would like to sign for improved mitigations against airborne infections in health settings. Hopefully it will mean both staff and patients get sick less and less staff are put in this position :-(

The real question here is "I don't like my boss because they've taken away hybrid working and aren't very good at social niceties, aibu"
It sounds like the best solution for everyone is to wfh when you're that kind of ill, reality is, you'll have already spread the bug across the office plus you've had to take a day off. You're boss also obviously isn't a particularly empathetic or caring person from the sound of it, which is probably why you didn't push through, plus they've removed the best mechanism for people still working when they're not 100% (wfh), so I can see why you decided not to go in. Personally I hate colds in the office, always catch them and it results in more sickness/time off overall across the team as everyone goes down like dominoes

Well no, but you probably also don't appreciate colleagues calling in sick every time they have a cold?

I'd much rather they stayed at home than passed it on to others in the office, that's completely selfish and irresponsible to put others in that position.
