Inspired by chat on another thread - one woman was told not to pop to the shop for milk but to put butter in her coffee instead 😄

I wasn't on mumsnet then but would love to know the maddest comments you saw?

I myself went mad during the pandemic 🙈 and refused to leave the house and judged anybody that did, I'll admit 😬😄 - I wish I'd been calmer

Please share 🥰

Edit - I know how awful the pandemic was for those who lost loved ones, and how serious those losses are - this is just about the unnecessary hysteria and comments stemming from that, not to poke fun at those who lost someone or became ill. 💕

My funniest memory - staying in a Spanish island resort hotel as a lockdown was declared.
The hotel had a designated spa and outdoor naturist area…
60 vacant sun loungers, circular swimming pool, jacuzzi, blue sky…one solitary gorgeous lady with an enviable hourglass figure, lovely hair and makeup - lying alone, naked wearing nothing but a clinical face mask.
The amusing memory will remain with me forever.

The police were simultaneously clearing the beaches of people.

I remember queuing in the snow other lockdown the queue went right around the Sainsbury’s carpark

Where are you? None of that where I was.

The sunny days were the worst. I can't handle sun or heat at all. And an attendant in my local tesco set up a sound system and played some sort of noise music to entertain the masses.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 24/04/2025 20:47

I remember the First Minister of Wales (Mark Drakeford) causing utter mayhem when he decreed that sanitary towels and tampons weren't essential items, and he had the relevant aisles in shops roped off.

I think his wife must have had a word with him because he fairly quickly backed down.
🤣

They're lucky that didn't turn into an impromptu disco!

I doubt some of that outside shop queuing would've lasted as long as it did had the first lockdown not been mostly sunny, dry and warm but not hot.

I spent a lovely hour in the sun with my kindle while queuing to get into sainsburys.
I used to WFH so it was always just me and the dog and cats but suddenly there were 3 more people in my house all day every day so I was happy to spend any time on my own. Even if it was in a queue.

I am sure that would have been in the news. People partying in Tesco car park, spreading Covid about.

Reminds me of the local press taking pictures of queues for places like B&M. They thought it was worthy of a news article.

The arrows,oh god the arrows

I work at the golden arches and the bosses where mental for the rules

We could walk 'down' the kitchen but not 'up' again-we had to walk around

I remember walking 'around' rather than 'down' the kitchen and getting screamed at by the manager

Walking 'around' meant I walked past nobody but if I'd walked 'down' I would have passed about 10 people

We could work arse to arse but god help you if you turned around

We where forced to wear masks-we could take them off on our breaks but had to put the same one back on to work (we'd walk in,have our temp taken, handed a mask and then we'd head upstairs, unmasked but had to put them on as we came down into the kitchen)

I remember the ear strap snapped and I was shouted at for asking for another one

They only stopped making us wear them when it got too expensive to buy them

I remember getting bollocked by some bloke for walking the 'wrong' way in tesco-he soon pissed off when (bigger than him) dp came around the corner to see what the shouting was about

It was a mental time-it really brought out the worst in people

Sillypigeon · 24/04/2025 21:07

You can still see the remains of the 2 metre and other signs around the place.
I found a pack of the horrible face masks the other day. Clearing out a cupboard , was going to put them in the bin, but I have some sanding to do so. They are finally coming in handy.
Also found some out of date Covid tests, not nhs ones! Ones we had bought when we had Covid and were testing to see when we would be free.

Aposterhasnoname · 24/04/2025 21:45

My regular supplier refused to sell us hand sanitiser because he said we weren’t essential workers. We’re a food manufacturer. I told him if he thought the panic buying was bad then, try announcing all the food manufacturers have closed down and put their staff on furlough. The army would be on the streets by teatime.

His response was that our staff don’t touch the product, so there was no danger of us passing Covid to our customers. I dont think he’s ever quite recovered from the ear bashing he got. I’m still furious now, how dare he say our staff don’t matter. I haven’t bought so much as paper towel from him since. He lost a massive account that day and he’s never once dared to ask why (very wise)

London. It was miserable and cold I remember texting dh about the end of days.

We also remember being in a surreal empty ish park in the snow a fair few times.

Upstartled · 23/04/2025 20:40

I don't think that people will ever be as willingly compliant ever again. Any trust capital between the population and the government has been almost entirely spent.

Yep. The contract between the government and people was ripped up, and spat on. I will never believe, respect or trust any politician or government again, in my life. And I won't forget that the party which is now in government had NOTHING to say about the damage lockdowns caused, and completely failed to provide a shred of opposition to the madness: the only thing they opposed was any notion of easing restrictions at all.

I took this creepy photo in our local park in January 2021. It has real ‘zombie apocalypse’ vibes.

@Aposterhasnoname We need more people like you! Perhaps some of the suppliers of booze to Downing Street should have done the same thing.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 24/04/2025 22:08

I remember one thread on here. It was a woman who was going to be traveling to Australia. Apparently at this point anyone traveling there was automatically quarantined for something like 30 days in quarantine camps. She fine with this but made the mistake of asking here how she could bring alcohol with her. Oh the roasting she endured.

I did manage to find a link to some tampon flasks for her…with careful rationing she could have made it 😁

Personal experiences during Covid can only be described as batshit. You can be rest assured that the US was just as inconsistent and stupid with their response.

My state had a ‘state of emergency’ which authorized lockdowns. They legally overstepped by trying to continue them so were forced to turn it over to individual counties and cities. We had bars and restaurants fully open with no mask or SD requirements on one side of the street and on the other full masking requirements with people limits.

Also if you remember that this was the summer of BLM protests… Yeah so protesting was ok but I couldn’t get my nails done 🤨

I can’t remember if it was here where I was called a granny killer for flying to Vegas when they reopened.

MrsFrumble · 24/04/2025 23:39

I’ve just remembered the poster who pulled her own tooth out with a pair of pliers because it was hurting so much and she couldn’t access a dentist. She posted a picture of the tooth and everything 😱😱
That was some kind of lockdown low point I think.

Agree @Upstartled
If there’s ever another Pandemic I think they’ll have to get the Armed Forces on the streets to get anyone to comply. Even then I’m not sure it would make a lot of difference.

Think I’d have gone for the old sting and door technique. 🥴

That is still going on now though due to the lack of NHS dentists.
I was struck off my NHS dentist list for not going... when they were not seeing people due to Covid!

There was a crazy thread on here where a poster complained about her husband getting shouted at by a neighbour, because they caught him hiding in their hedge. Lockdown restrictions had just been lifted and people were allowed to go on walks. The husband was messing around with their DCs and hid in some hedge/bush. This spooked a neighbour who yelled at the husband. The thread descended into COVID insanity about who was BU and I'd love to be able to find the thread again for a laugh.

I did too, and wiped down groceries. This was at the beginning when I didn’t know it was airborne.

Covid or not think I’d be shouting at some random stranger in my hedge ! 😉
Come on mumsnetters we all know how that thread would go here.

‘Random guy lurking in your hedge what would you do ‘….errm 🤔
set the hose on him 🤣
the dog
or lots of mumsnetters !

Oh I really wish I was around here during Covid 🥳

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/04/2025 02:20

One comment that was truly wild was where a woman was questioning whether/why she should wear a mask in an EMPTY cinema.

She was called every vile name under the sun (granny killer and worse!) when her chances of passing a virus (that she didn't even have!) onto anybody were virtually non-existent.

That's when I realised so many people in lockdown had seriously lost the plot!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 25/04/2025 02:46

@DrPrunesqualer it was truly a place of wonder and lurkers 👀 delight

I’m surprised anyone managed to wash their hands with all of the handwringing and curtain twitching that was going on.
