Is getting dgms' rings resized to fit me disrespectful?

I have my dgm's engagement ring and a pretty ring from DH's dgm (both dgms are dead and the rings given to me by my dm and mil).

I would love to be able to wear the rings but they will need sizing up to fit me.

Part of me feels like I shouldn't resize them as it's altering them and they won't be purely my grandmother's ring or DH's nanna's ring anymore.

But then I think i would love to wear them as both as a tribute to two beloved women and as beautiful rings.

I especially want to wear my dgm's engagement ring as I remember it as a representation of her from when I was little.

When my dd gets them she will need to get them resized again (smaller).

Is it disrespectful to get them resized now to fit me?

Yes it's disrespectful, YABU to alter the rings
No it's fine, YANBU to alter the rings

I know you have decided to get them resized already, but thought it might help you to know that I did this with both my Nans' rings. I had one ruby wedding anniversary ring, and my other Nan's sapphire engagement ring, and I wear them both every day. People often ask about them and it means I can talk about both Nans and it means I frequently think of them and the happy times I spent with them. I hope the same will be true for you.

It would be disrespectful to accept the rings and not wear them. Get them resized and make everyone happy by seeing them in use again.

Yep get them resized, but like a PP said, get any stone settings checked too as the resizing can impact the settings and you could be at risk of losing stones.

I read that Navajo (Native American) silversmiths believe an item of jewellery carries "spirit" with it so if an item is stolen for example, it will carry a negative spirit and will be unlucky for the wearer. Equally, if an item is gifted as an heirloom, it is gifted in love and therefore carries with it a positive spirit. On that basis, resizing the rings won't alter the "spirit" of them and the two dgms I'm sure will be very happy that you are wearing them. ❤️

What’s the point of having them if you can’t wear them?

That’s lovely ☺️

I can't understand how it could ever be seen as disrespectful. Resize, wear them and enjoy!

I got my grandmas engagement and wedding ring and got them made into a pendant to wear. The rings were not my style and I wanted to be able to have it worn every day so got a beautiful pendant made.

my teen has received a beautiful diamond ring from a relatives will and is getting it resized to be able to wear it.

there is not point them sitting in a jewellery box going nothing.

I had my Grandmother's 2 wedding rings (her original one, and another that my Grandad gave her for their 50th anniversary), and a signet ring melted down and made into my wedding ring for when I got married 24 years ago. I never would have worn them otherwise- her fingers were tiny- and I never take them off now.

Wear them, love them, enjoy them. I love to wear my mum's jewellery, it makes me think of her. ❤️
