Just a suggestion, but is it possible that he was chosen as it's an easy fixture and they didn't want too strong a side? We've had instances with school matches where if you field the strongest team the victory is so overwhelming it's embarassing. Such occassions are a good opportunity for weaker players to have a chance to play.
