M&S cyber attack and the levels of spam I've had the past few days

I have been inundated on my Outlook email account with spam over the past few days. It's has been unrelenting. Just now I got an email saying M&S have had a cyber attack.

AIBU to think this must be related, for reference I don't really sue this email address for many things so no reason it would be on any lists.

I can’t access my email, I’m sure it’s because of the M&S hack.

MrsMoastyToasty · 13/05/2025 11:37

I've not had any emails from them! DH works for them (in a depot) and I have spouses entitlement to staff discount.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/05/2025 12:35

Im laughing at the line at the bottom of the sign in. “Your data is safe with us” 😂

Also I pay by PayPal so they’re perhaps less interested. Meaning, M and S don’t have my payment data.

I have an outlook email that I reserve only for my most important financial things unfortunately, for some reason, I used it for my Marks and Spencer’s account. Just recently I’ve been flooded with spam. I set up loads of rules and nearly all of it goes into my junk folders but I don’t like to receive any. I’m considering retiring that address now. SO ANNOYING.
I don’t understand why Microsoft can’t deal with it better. It’s so obviously spam

I do the same and also for some reason used it for m&s. Also thinking about binning off that email. It's very annoying.

I only got the email about it yesterday! (Clearly I haven't been watching the news). Haven't had any more spam than usual. However, after reading you were advised to change your password, I went to M&S and changed my password. That was confirmed by email. Then last night 5 identical emails from M&S saying - you have updated your payment details. If this wasn't you, call this number.

I looked up the number to check it was genuine, which it was and called it and that was no help. It just went round in circles. First she said have you bought anything recently (no). Then she said contact your bank. Then she said you can ignore the emails. I said - well it says my payment details have been updated and if this wasn't you, contact us, so I'm contacting you. If it wasn't me and it wasn't you then either these people have updated my payment details or they are sending out fake emails from you (more likely probably). The email address was the genuine M&S one.

Anyway - what a nightmare! I have opened an Experian Identity Plus account, to monitor for identity fraud, which is £10.99 a month. When this happened with Fatface some years ago, they actually gave your free Experian for a year.

So far it's Harrods, the Co-Op and M&S. I wonder who next? Next?

This was confirmed in the news way before M&S sent the letters out yesterday.

I have huge respect to M&S, and as irritating as all the spam e-mails and calls have been over the past few days, I suspect that the company and its employees are having a MUCH harder time of it than I am.
Really hope they can get through this intact and it doesn’t threaten the company’s future.

manywanderings · 14/05/2025 15:39

Edit I think the emails about your payment details being updated were phishing emails. I noticed the M&S phone number it gave in the email (which is actually their correct number) was actually a link to click on. Which I didn't do. I googled the phone number to check it was genuine and then phoned it.

Finally M&S have admitted customer details have been hacked. I said that weeks ago!

ive gone from virtually no Spam to tons in last 2 days

Same here. I’m getting spam ‘free gift’ type emails every day and I never used to.

Blondebrownorred · 13/05/2025 11:29

Ah yes makes sense why I've had loads extra spam. I've had the hamper one and one that keeps coming saying something about receiving £5318. I keep blocking but they keep coming

Dammit, I could have done with the £5K!

RaininSummer · 14/05/2025 18:30

Yes. I am getting loads of messages saying I asked to change passwords on various sites when I haven't.

Nopeasinapasty · 14/05/2025 19:02

Along with the increase in spam emails, I've also had a lot of sms messages today asking to speak to me about a job I could do in my spare time. I'm blocking straight away but it's really getting on my nerves now 😡

Fizbosshoes · 14/05/2025 19:24

I got the email from M and S but I'd been blaming John Lewis because I started getting a ton of spam emails the day I gave them my email (in store) I hadn't linked it to M and S but it started well after their cyber attack started

manywanderings · 15/05/2025 22:45

I've been getting loads of spam emails about car claims and some phone calls with automated voices about jobs.

roses2 · 19/05/2025 21:03

I've had three sms today pretending to be from Amazon giving me a link to click on for a refund on recalled products

Don't know how to stop as they come from different numbers
