We have a friend who's a tiler, haven't got a clue what the going day rate is. He's £225 for day rate. Is this expensive? I think it's quite dear.. we're based down in South west

They’re £280 a day where I live, so I’d say that £225 is very reasonable!

Stripeyanddotty · 22/04/2025 18:41

I’ve just googled day rate for tiler uk’ and the answer is ‘£200 to £350’.

Cloudyvibes · 22/04/2025 18:43

its actually on the cheaper side.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 22/04/2025 18:43

I think that's very reasonable. I presume they are self employed? In which case they have to account for unpaid holidays, sickness, pension etc.

taxguru · 22/04/2025 18:45

That's actually pretty cheap. Of course depends how many hours they actually work during the day. If they work a full 7/8 hour day, very cheap. If more likely, they manage 4 or 5 hours with breaks, late starts and early finishes, then not quite so cheap!

If a full 8 hour day (inc travel etc), it's only really £25 per hour, less travel costs, equipment, materials, etc., which is really the bar minimum for someone self employed compared with minimum wage, after you factor in the insurance, overheads, unpaid holidays/sickness, national insurance, pensions, unchargeable time (admin, quoting, picking up supplies, etc).

Wells37 · 22/04/2025 18:48

I would say that’s very reasonable.
Take off 30% roughly for tax and national insurance etc.

bluebunnyjacket · 22/04/2025 18:48

On the cheap side. £280 a day here

BallerinaRadio · 22/04/2025 18:49

I'm sure your friend would be delighted to know you're asking the opinion of random people on the internet instead of trusting him

alcoholnightmare · 22/04/2025 18:49

Nope, a skill most of us don’t have. Pay up or go cheaper and get what you’ve paid for

brettsalanger · 22/04/2025 18:51

on the cheap side. 280 a day here. Many of those are plus vat.

Greenfields20 · 22/04/2025 18:51

My partner is a tiler and that's a good fair rate

Nannyfannybanny · 22/04/2025 18:52

We were quoted £200 a day 8 years ago
DH did it himself in the end.

Roselilly36 · 22/04/2025 18:53

Sounds fair to me.

BoldBlueZebra · 22/04/2025 18:55

It depends on the tile and layout here I recently had my utility walls tiled in a heritage style tile in a herringbone and tbh I was glad it was a fixed price and not by the day because it took forever and was a complete pain in the rump - the floor that was a square tile and just flew down was done in a day the herringbone took 3 days and swears lots of swears

Stickortwigs · 22/04/2025 19:01

Good one round here is £450 a day. And he had a waiting list.

CloudCustard · 22/04/2025 19:03

I paid somewhere between £300 and £350 total. He did two full days 8am-5pm and did a brilliant job. I recommend him to family and they had to wait a while.

babasaclover · 22/04/2025 19:07

Gare to get a propers mates rate anymore as cost of living is through the roof and he’ll likely have to have turned down a proper day rate to help you out. It sounds under market value to me so he is already helping you out

Katieweasel · 22/04/2025 19:10

I think that’s pretty reasonable

LakieLady · 22/04/2025 19:12

Very reasonable. One of my brothers in law is a tiler, his day rate was £300 years ago. He's amazingly good though, and used to do a lot of high-end jobs that involved very expensive materials.

TimeForABreak4 · 22/04/2025 19:12

No that's really reasonable.

Oasister · 22/04/2025 19:15

Really reasonable. We paid significantly more.

Lifeofthepartay · 22/04/2025 19:16

That's very cheap, in Scotland, 5 years ago we got our floor done, 2 guys, day and a half work (around 12 hours) it was £1100 (they didn't charge per hour or day, they just quoted the job).

RosesAndHellebores · 22/04/2025 19:18

That would be as cheap as chips round here. I paid £320, in London, ten years ago. He was very good though.

PassingStranger · 22/04/2025 19:27

Yes that's normal.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/04/2025 19:44

Most se charge £25+ so seems an average rate to me

they have to pay tax and ni out of that. Plus pension and include sick days /holiday etx and travel

let alone pli and any tools etx

get a fixed price for the job or can end up being costly if add another day or two
