When you're out and about (public transport, cafes, theatre, cinema) always look behind you as you get up to leave. The number of times I've retrieved a bag, jumper etc which I would have left behind - but spotted it when I took a quick backward glance.

Always leave 10 mins earlier for an appointment than you strictly need to. If you have 10+ mins in hand at your destination, so what? It's better to be waiting, feeling calm and collected, than to be stressed and flustered running to the meeting. If travelling by car to an important appointment further afield, I'd make this 30 mins. I've never regretted doing this.

When interacting with other people (especially strangers and people in shops etc) be the person you'd like them to be. Treat everyone with kindness and respect until and unless you have reason not to! This also works for me 98% of the time. I rarely find people are rude if you're nice to them.

Work hard in silence- let your success be your noise.

My step mother - be self sufficient, it’s always better to do it on your own

If it won't matter in ten years time, it doesn't matter now.

Live on less than you make/ save and invest - it’s always a good thing to have a cushion/ nest egg.

if you can't open a jar just dunk it in boiling water.

Don't let payrises lead to live style creep.

My first boss told me to split every pay increase (including the first one he gave me) into 3 unless you

1/3 straight to long term goals- pension/housing deposit or mortgage reduction

1/3 to short-medium term goals - savings account or towards new car etc

1/3 to fun money/additional comforts etc

His view was if you didn't need it before you had it, you don't need it all immediately.

It's working well. I hope I live until very good age or someone's getting a nice inheritance.
