Unknown card added to my Amazon account, should I be worried

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help me make sense of this. I went into my Amazon account today and an unknown card has been added as a 'back up'. It says my name and billing address but I don't own a card with these details, its only a Mastercard which I have never owned. I don't share an account with anyone, no one knows my details to the account, I live alone so it's not someone I know.

That’s weird. They have very good customer service though so I’d get in touch and ask them if it’s a mistake their end

iamnotalemon · 22/04/2025 00:32

Delete the card and change your password

EmeraldRoulette · 22/04/2025 00:33

Yes, get in touch with them

tbh I'd look into it full stop. I'd be worried someone has set up a card in your name. Get the details of it before removing it frim
your account.

Are any of your cards due for renewal?
What bank is it, do you have an account there? You can usually check your card details in the app so it would be worth going through all your banking apps to see if it matches with anything.

Cornetto3 · 22/04/2025 00:35

Buy something small on it, see what happens

Enko · 22/04/2025 00:35

Have you recently set up a payment on your phone? If you use Samsung wallet some banks doesn't support it so you end up with a different card number to what one you actually think you are using.

I would contact Amazon and also change password.

It doesn't say, it just says 'back up' and then shows it is a Mastercard and the last 4 digits and expiry which I don't recognise at all. I have never had a Mastercard. My card isn't due for renewal

I’d be concerned, yes. I would delete it from Amazon and also contact Mastercard to tell them it should not be associated with you / check you have not been the target of identity fraud. Hopefully not but I wouldn’t let it go without investigating.

Thank you for the info, I haven't set up any payments though. Very strange

Where can you see it? If I go on the payment section on my amazon account it shows the cards and an image of what bank they are connected to.

TheMimsy · 22/04/2025 01:05

Is it a long expiry date on it?

I use Clearpay sometimes with Amazon and they create a fake temporary card that’s added to your account.

TheMimsy · 22/04/2025 01:10

@HiYaaa personally I’d change my password for Amazon and the email account it’s linked to.

id temporarily remove my card or add a virtual one with a short shelf life (monzo and others let you do this for a ‘pot within your account - and I just leave the linked pot empty).

contact Amazon and let them know. The other steps are just easier in my opinion to do first as getting hold of a contact or chat person can be a pain in the ass.

id look up the safety measures. Can you add two factor authentication for now.

have you logged into amazon on any other devices?

Yes, and contact Amazon CS immediately.

That's very strange . Not only because if someone has access to your amazon. But also if someone has enough of your details to apply for a mastercard in your name .
As others have said take any details that's shown for your record.
Change passwords on amazon and any email . Online banking and such
Check delivery addresses on amazon . Is there a new one?
Check credit report.
But also contact your bank and Mastercard. See if you can find out if someone has infact stolen your identity.
No harm in checking

Yellowpingu · 22/04/2025 09:13

I bank with Santander. For years my debit card was Visa but on the last issue they’d changed to Mastercard so it can happen. However, there’s no way your bank would be able to add it to your Amazon account so do as pp have suggested and take precautions.

Enko · 22/04/2025 10:00

Do you ever use their klarna pay? Have you added phone pay to your android phone lately?

That's so strange. Have you checked all your accounts to see if the card number is linked to any of them?

If its got your name on the card, it would be quite unusual for someone to fraudulently open an account in your name and then link it to your own amazon account, a fraudster would normally do one or the other so there is probably a simple explanation somewhere.
