Lost Ring Found

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 21/04/2025 22:54

This isn't an AIBU but as this topic is the most popular I thought I'd post it here.

I found this ring on the underground this evening, it doesn't seem valuable but I thought it may have sentimental value to its owner. Please can all you lovely mumsnetters share this so I can hopefully return the ring to its owner. I have attach two photos below.

You should have handed it in.
who is going to see it here?

Surely best to hand to station

It was late and I couldn't find a staff member to hand it in to.

What is lovely?
The finder should have handed it in to station ideally, or at another TFL location, or to the police.
No one is going to think "Oh dear I've lost my ring,... I know, I'm going to have a look on Mumsnet and see if anyone has found it?" The finder has effectively stolen kidnapped it.

She hasn’t stolen it drama queen, she found it . She’s not legally obliged to hand in lost property.

CheesyRaver · 24/04/2025 07:48

She stolen it @Kilroyonly it's theft by finding. Would she be prosecuted? Probably not but look up people who have 'found' lottery tickets and been proven guilty.

Gosh, I haven't seen someone so upset about someone finding a lost ring since Gollum.

Never2many · 24/04/2025 07:55

Jesus Christ.

Someone starts a thread attempting to do a good thing because actually, the internet is a lot smaller than we give it credit for, and within about five posts someone has to jump on the thread and spout a load of bollocks about how it’s theft and how the OP has stolen it and could be prosecuted because people have been for using lottery tickets.

Reality is that if OP wanted to steal it she presumably wouldn’t be advertising it all over the internet.

If you belong to one of those toxic local fb pages which seem to exist in every town, there are constant posts on those from people who have found wallets/bank cards/mobile phones and the list goes on. Are they all thieves as well?

In truth most people don’t think to check with staff at venues if items have been handed in, because most people don’t ever expect to see them again. So it’s actually more likely that someone might see a post on a website or social media than it is that they would go back to one of the several underground stations on the route they were on.

OonaStubbs · 24/04/2025 07:56

Take it to Mount Doom and throw it in.

Oh for goodness sake what a dramatic response! I haven't stolen the ring I found it and if you had bothered to read my response to another poster you would know that I did try to hand it in but it was late at night and I couldn't find any station staff. Read my comments properly before you post utter bullshit and accusations that I'm a thief and if I was a thief would I have taken the time to post on Mumsnet? 🙄

What a load of bollocks! There is no such thing as 'theft by finding' because I didn't snatch it off the owners finger, I found it and I'm attempting to return it. Give your head a wobble you moron and just to be clear here is the legal definition of theft.

In the UK, theft is legally defined under Section 1 of the Theft Act 1968 as the dishonest appropriation of property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving them of it. This means a person is guilty of theft if they take property that belongs to someone else, do so dishonestly, and intend to keep it permanently. The principal aim of theft is to acquire property.

I didn't take it from its owner, I haven't been dishonest, I posted here in the hope I could return it to the owner and I don't intend to keep it either. Perhaps you should rethink your logic.

No good turn goes unpunished does it?
She could find a member of staff to hand it to.
There always has to be some sniping post on MN these days.

Thank you. I'm actually surprised at people accusing me of theft clearly common sense is no longer common. The irony is the ring is small and there is no way it would fit over my sausage size fingers so there is no benefit to me keeping it and I wouldn't anyway its not to my taste and belongs to someone else. I once lost my phone on the underground and someone found it and contacted my mum (it wasn't a smart phone so easy access to contacts) to tell her and I got it back the next day. It would never have occcurred to me to accuse the lovely lady of theft because she didn't hand it in to station staff but contacted my mum instead.

I posted here because I remember a thread about 5 or 6 years ago where a poster lost her engagement ring and another poster found it. I thought it a was slim chance but thought I'd try anyway. I'm travelling on the underground tomorrow so I'll try and find a station worker again and hand it in.

Ooo you terrible person!

Imagine if you found its owner this way? Pretty bloody cool.

So would I but it doesn't look likely that will happen. I have handed it in to station staff last night when I travelled on the underground again along with details of when and where I found it. Hopefully the owner has contacted them already and they gave their details so they might be able to return it. I hope so anyway I remember when my sister lost our nan's wedding ring and she was devastated and never found it. Which is another reason I hoped the owner would see this post because although it didn't look valuable it might have sentimental value to them. I never thought I'd get accused of stealing it though 🙄 but there you go there's always people who can't help themselves from having a dig.
