To wonder who is buying chocolate cereal

Who om each is buying Lion bar and Oreo cereal? See also lucky charms, nesquick and coco pops
These aren't breakfast foods (or any sort of food). I literally cannot imagine anyone thinking it is a reasonable way of feeding children?

They’re 4 and 5. They have choices. We have at least 6 cereals at any one time, plus toast and usually croissants. I let them choose and don’t try to direct.

They’re healthy happy sporty kids.

If I was concerned about their weight I’d react accordingly.

It's not just about weight though is it? It's the nutrition.

You can be malnourished and not overweight.

You don’t have to. I use normal porridge oats and it t takes five minutes. Less if you soak the oats overnight and warm them up or if you use the microwave and then just let it stand with the occasional stir. Jumbo oats take ages but porridge oats like Flahavan’s are quick.

Everyone is different . I can't understand why anyone likes kale, oysters, blue cheese and pate but obviously people do! If youre wondering who is buying camenbert, olives and crackers it's me for me every weekend.

Yes we should all care. The NHS is on it's knees trying to handle lots of health conditions, secondary to poor diet and lack of exercise. Obesity is only the tip of the ice berg.

Childrens diets are positively frightening. Really fascinating to read the earlier message that most primary age children wouldn't eat a pulled pork?

Italy (and other European countries) have sweet breakfasts. Pastry, Nutella, pistachio cream, etc. washed down with a cappuccino.

A sweet breakfast is absolutely fine when balanced with the rest of the diet. Don't demonise breakfast cereals. It's diet as a whole that's poor over here. And the cost of healthy food is utterly ridiculous. I often look at my fruit bowl when I've restocked it after the weekly shop has been and shake my head at how much that cost to fill. So many people couldn't do that AND feed their kids three meals a day.

Because breakfast cereals masquerade as a meal. A kitkat or an ice cream is homest about its status in the food world but breakfast cereals pretend to be a decent meal.

So bran, wheat, and porridge aren't meals? Because all those 3 are classified as cereals, and all recommended by doctors.

Those cereals are more like pudding or sweet treat snacks.
Cocopoos are lovely though and have less sugar than a lot of “healthy” granola type cereals.

I think one of the big tricks of the food industry has been to persuade the public and the media to displace all their anxiety about food onto sugar so that people end up thinking that if you have a choice of two items the lowest sugar one is by default healthier, regardless of the rest of the nutritional profile. I read a piece in the Times a while ago in which the author fretfully noted that a Pret granola bowl with fruit had the same total sugar content as a Mars bar. If only she’d known, she said, she’d just face eaten the Mars bar and enjoyed herself. (See also: home made smoothies contain as much sugar as Coca Cola.) But the granola bowl will also contain vitamins, minerals and fibre. The Mars bar will only contain dodgy fats, flavourings, and a bunch of yucky emulsifier. Regardless of the comparable sugar content it is not a similar food item at all. The same is true of the smoothie v the coke or a bowl of the dreaded cereal v a home made banana muffin. Sugar is only part of the picture.

Funny thing is I went with my three year old to an extremely posh family’s birthday party for their four year old recently and it was all those horrid bright coloured party ring biscuits, chocolate fingers, and (eventually) pizza.

For a GP, you seem to know fuck all about how body weight says very little about health.

When I was starving and bingeing, but lowest end healthy BMI you'd have judged me as more healthy than I am now, when I am overweight (but eating good food, not starving and only very rarely bingeing - as you probably don't know, it's fucking hard to overcome an eating disorder).

Perhaps you could also ask your employer for some CPD on how part of the reason fat people have worse health is because doctors assume every symptom is due to weight and are thus unconsciously giving delayed and poorer care to them.

So many excuses for giving kids shit to eat because they play sport or burn it off. It's not all about obesity, it's the fact these kids are starting their day with a hefty dose of sugar on top of carbs. It's normalising eating a bowl full of sugar first thing in the morning.

I am a right judge pants when it comes to feeding kids.

I walked down the cereal aisle today and was aghast that such rubbish is being fed to kids. (Healthy adults I also judge a bit but if you have a normal bmi and an otherwise good diet then it's up to you.).

I just don't understand why you wouldn't want to give your kids a healthy diet, especially to start the day.

I think we all know that if the OP had been a parent agonising over why her children were overweight, and had posted a food diary that included chocolate cereal, you would all be falling over yourselves to sneer at how unhealthy that was, and it’s no wonder her children were fat.

My DD sometimes has coco pops (well, supermarket own brand). I checked the sugar content and while it's obviously higher than weetabix and cornflakes it's a lot less than some of the other cereals on offer.
