Blood in child’s vomit

Posting for traffic sorry.

DD 5.5 has been complaining of stomach ache for half hour following eating an ice cream. Had a sloppy number 2, and then still had stomach ache. Took her for a bath to ease the stomach pain, where she ended up being sick. Sick was brown - ice cream was milk chocolate. But had bits of blood in it towards the end.

there was a lot of heaving and straining beforehand, and is now saying feels much better. But I’m slightly concerned about the blood.

would it be unreasonable to call 111 or go to A&E?

I'd definitely call 111.

blooshboon · 21/04/2025 17:46

Also - not sure if it’s worth mentioning the blood was bright red. Not old. And the brown sick was curdled indicative it was the ice cream.

Go to A&E. Now.

blooshboon · 21/04/2025 17:48

It was stringy blood in like mucus if that helps.

I would go to A&E but as DD is now back to normal being fine I’m worried they wouldn’t look twice and say everything’s okay?

That’s why I’m asking if I should call 111 first?

Go to A&E. It’s not normal and needs checking out. 111 will likely tell you to go. Why risk it??

BlueMum16 · 21/04/2025 17:51

Just ring 111 and get some medical advice. I'm not sure why you would delay?

blooshboon · 21/04/2025 17:52

I’m asking because I suffer with health anxiety, so didn’t want to go up there and waste the NHS’s time.

You won't be wasting their time, they'll want you to head in x

nocoolnamesleft · 21/04/2025 17:53

I mean, probably best to get checked out, but highly likely to be a Mallory Weiss tear (slight tear in the surface layer of the lining of the oesophagus, caused by vomiting or retching).

noctilucentcloud · 21/04/2025 17:53

NHS says go to a&e if your child has vomited blood and has tummy pain. I don't think they'll think you're wasting their time.

blooshboon · 21/04/2025 17:54

The tummy pain has now gone though, that’s what I’m saying.

DD vomited with blood in it when she was a baby. I contacted the GP who sent us to the hospital. DD was fine but they were clear they wanted to check her over to be sure. 111 might be a good shout, we had direct admission to the children’s ward, but they would not criticise you if you went straight to A&E.

TheThreeMiracles · 21/04/2025 18:00

completely different but I was pooing pure blood I phoned 111 and they said straight to a and e so they may advise you to do that too xx

Dairymilkisminging · 21/04/2025 18:15

Nhs website says to get it check out if blood in vomit if that helps ease your worries about going in.

blooshboon · 21/04/2025 18:16

We have an OOH appointment at 7:45 tonight as advised by 111.

For someone with health anxiety, you seem keen to ignore everyone’s advice. Call 111 if you are unsure about wasting time, but personally i’d at least call.

blooshboon · 21/04/2025 18:24

@Zanatdyi mean I literally called 111 and have been given an appointment by them at the hospital.. I was on the phone to 111 whilst replying to posters.

Hi love, they said that she more than likely tore a thin vessel at the back of her throat when heaving, because she wasn’t heaving normally as such, it was a mouth wide open straining kind of heave. Also weren’t too concerned over the brown sick, as it was curled, and she had eaten a milk chocolate ice cream. No more sickness though, and has seemed fine in herself since, thank you for checking in, just no more Co-op ice creams lol x
