Take a few afternoons off for life admin

I want to take 4 half days off for life admin:

buying a house so need to see solicitors and banks.
need to speak to the sons schools about stuff
general life admin that I need to sort

i took 2.5 days off during Easter a total of 5.5 days since the start of the year.

Am I being lazy - I don’t want to run about trying to fit things in and then come back to a a dozen messages on the teams chat wondering where i am.

I would see if as a waste of my precious annual leave
But if it suits you go for it

i make a list on a Sunday night of all the ‘life admin’ I have to do and aim to do 1 or 2 every lunchtime

In all honesty @Davidpuddyy people like you who take sick leave or dont work when they're supposed to contribute to massive under production that affects each abd everyone of us as escalated costs.

Take time off properly - if it's just a couple of hours, cut your lunch break down and work longer hours - either start early or finish late - agree this with your manager. Life admin is not a good enough excuse to swing the lead pretending to be ill or just being evasive and no answering emails etc. Grow up and be an adult!

Actually your employer has a say in when and how you can take it. You can’t just choose when you want, has to be within the policy and often approved.

Depends on the job and the employer. I very very rarely have any problems booking leave now, I put it in, my manager presses "yes". All that's expected of me is to make sure there is at least one of the team still working.

Previous jobs I had to fight tooth and nail to be allowed to take any time off and it was awful.

MissHollysDolly · 21/04/2025 20:08

I’d be less annoyed with you doing the half days than you taking regular long lunch breaks and sorting all the house bits out without using your leave.

tigger1001 · 21/04/2025 20:09

It's your annual leave, use it how it best suits you! Who cares if others get annoyed - if your work approved it, then that's that.

Sesma · 21/04/2025 20:15

It's no different to taking time off for decorating, as many do

Life admin is a pretty widely used phrase, I haven't googled but I'd think it's probably explained in online dictionary type websites

I’ve only ever heard it used on here! That and the ‘mental load!’ 🤷‍♀️

Both phrases have been in common usage for quite some years now. I'm surprised you haven't come across them

I’m surprised you missed where I said I’ve only ever heard them on here…I’ve never heard them used in real life.

So maybe they changed their mind, which is good but what's the point of the post then?!
Should I use my annual leave to take time off to do admin - err yes. Makes fir such an interesting conversation, right?!

No, their post was about jacking off work so I responded to that and their earlier admittance that they were going to just go awol.

AthWat · 21/04/2025 17:58

Why? Why not just take the 4 half days if they want to and their work allows?

@AthWat just feels like a waste of annual leave! Two days gone on life admin so looking at whether Op could get it done without ‘wasting’ AL

no idea what the specific life admin tasks are but lots of places have longer hours for online chats, longer phone opening hours etc so may be options to go things differently

Well they want to do it; that's the whole premise of the post. They are not asking for advice on how use less annual leave.
